Not a jocky stick, it is a neck yoke, everyone I know calls them double neck yoke or double backers. Or sidebacker. Its the “old school” stuff. Martengales replaced them.
PeytonMParticipantWell money is already spent he’s supposed to be an amazing puller. Im gonna work him single and with another horse of mine that’s pretty old. Maybe my old horse can teach him a thing or two cause I the older one in the woods last weekend and was awesome! His team mate is having a baby with in the week so i’ve been letting her take it easy. Ill keep you posted, I had a smooth snaffle in him before and I got wire bits now if that don’t work I have a friend that can hitch him every day and he said he would work him for me for a while
PeytonMParticipantThanks for the replys I understand what you mean about debt. The trailer im looking at is a 3h ssundowner sunlite 727, listed at 22k. I would have a payment of rroughly 275 a month on it, I understand the idea of the camper or little shack on skids. But I haul my horses alot, im getting in to the pulling side of things so it would also be used on weekends at pulls to stay in, I own a 81 ww 18 stck trailer I would sell for down payment.
PeytonMParticipantwell right now I live by Colfax, but I’m trying to move over by stratford because I got a job welding over there. I found a place over there that I could bring my team with me but I haven’t checked it out.
I talked with a few people and I get the response ” you need to have a hitch rail to hook with” well I harness at one but I don’t hitch at one, thus being I have 2 wagons with poles, a work sled, a disk and mower, I’m not going to have a hitch pole in front of each of theses or do I have the wrong idea on hitching? I harness the team walk them around to the back of the barn where we park everything and then hitch on what ever it is I’m hitching on.
thanks for the help.
Peyton
PeytonMParticipantWhat hooking him with one of my other geldings? I am looking forward to spring.. if it ever comes to Wisconsin
PeytonMParticipantevery one i know that breaks horses for driving just harnesses them and puts them with a mate and takes them out driving in the winter time in the snow for a few reasons, one is if they want to have a run away your in a open field and they get tired fast esp. when they are pulling a big off road tire from a end loader.
PeytonMParticipantcarl, how big are most bits used on Belgians? 6? 5?
PeytonMParticipantnow my next question, I have a harness that uses a martingale and a harness thats a twin neck yoke would I be able to use both those harnesses in a abreast hitch?
PeytonMParticipanttheres very little pitting on the middle of the bit.
PeytonMParticipantthanks for the tip Tracey, I do leave halters on the horses. I m gonna swap bits from my other teams bridles on.
PeytonMParticipantits both sides on the gelding. looks like if you had a blister and popped it and took the skin off it. I didn’t see a bur or anything on the bit and the bit doesnt pull back on the lip. I’ll look it over again. I have a smooth snaffle in him.
PeytonMParticipantno, there is nothing over to the right that would cause him to want to go that way, I dont want to cut him down but hes just been really not all there lately. if he would go to the right he would go up behind the house and by a small woods, theres no shed, horses or food or anything up there. you can come all the way around the house back by the wagon I had loaded with hay that I was putting on the sled to go out for feeding but that route is really icy thus, I swung them around that tree. Its not like hes use to going behind the house cause I never go back that way I always would turn them around in the yard. I just dont understand why hes being so weird. the other day I was in the woods with them in the one spot i have to hang to the right and I didnt see the tree on the other side and he just walks up to it and got hung up on it had to get he half out of harness to get freed up, I admit it was part my fault but if some one told me to walk straight on to a tree I’d go to the one side a little bit to miss it. I dont know what the deal is. maybe its just me.
PeytonMParticipanthow long are the short lines that clip on the hame ring? Im gonna make them out of nylon
PeytonMParticipantDom, I’ve seen that and the 4 abreast with the middle 2 on pole and one on out sides, I have 4 horses now both are normally only teamed with their mate. I haven’t tried to mix them on a hitch. I just really dont know what horse should go where. say on 4 abreast should i go a team on the right and team on left or should i have team split and team in the middle on the pole like normal? the only thing I have where I would hook 3 or 4 is a plow. and I don’t have a very big spot to plow. I guess I’ll know more this spring cause a friend of mine said he would show me with his team. I just want to have an Idea before hand.
PeytonMParticipantcopy that. I get my latest and greatest team tomorrow. see how things go this summer keep me posted on that PTO tractor cart.
