    George,
what kind of boiler do you have? the boilers we have been looking into say you don’t need to cut and split wood but that you can put in 3′ – 4′ pieces? Are you able to do that with yours or dose it just work better cut and split? if you can burn long lengths you can get slab wood from sawmills cheep maybe to help offset cutting that much wood from your own woods, I know I have given away many semi loads of slabs to who ever would take them away.

    Scott,

    Nice !

I bought a 5 footer from baily’s in 1999 when they said all the computers were going to crash(not that I believed it or any thing). It really mows the wood, for firewood rounds it really shines, it will go through a 9″ lodgepole in a couple dozen pulls at most, faster than a dull chainsaw, it is also good for finishing cuts down to a line in log home notches or window cutouts. Like most things in life, sharpness is everything, even the occasional touch up with a diamond file helps a lot , thanks for posting this guide.

    Nice fotos Wolfgang,
I studied them over a bit looking for a way to have the third ox unload from the side, perhaps a tilt dump with a rope…. then, being half asleep by this time at night as usual , i realized you have the same three up as I do (soon to be a four up as my oldest son should be able to join in as soon as schools out) 🙂

What about a “wire crane”- like in the sweedish logging thread- mounted in the front or back?

Here is the sawmill job I’m working on right now at 10,125′, the dang saw is to heavy to lift up like the fence – so i get to dig down, makes for a strong back after a few weeks of that. I’m almost out of logs – so i get to start skidding soon, I guess I will finally have to make that scoot i’ve been reading so much about here on dap. there is about 100 more spruce trees that blew down in a storm last spring – nice big-straight grained.
Post some photos you’all its the only way i get to travle these days!

    Hi Jason,
I finaly have all my steel and axles to make your cart, thanks for the detailed plans! I was wondering if you have ever run this arch with a single horse ? I have a horse out for probably 6 months with a really bad absess. I have looked at the shaft set up on the pioneer cart , would something like that work ? if you have any photos you could post that would be helpful. Also i was wondering if you use your arch just for logging or can/do you hook up other stuff to it ?
    Thanks

    Nice reply Carl,
My question to every one is – Why ? Why do we let them do this to us? how did it get to the point were every part of our lives is so overly regulated, licensed and inspected, to the point that we have to consult an attorney to figure out what the attorney/polititions are throwing at us. This country is bankrupt, the states are bankrupt, the county’s are bankrupt and yet we the people are paying people to make more and more regulations and then to inforce those regulations upon us impedeing our ability to take care of ourselves and our community.
I was listening to Egypians gettin all rowdy in the streets this morning on the radio and wondering how long till that kind of stuff starts up around here, the problem is my nearest neighbor is 1/2 mile and so on, so to get a mob together and get rowdy on the meat inspecter might take some effort.
Why don’t we just all sell our meat as needed and let the chips fall where they may? Or get writen consent from the buyer that they are of sound mind and body and are purchasing this here bag of meat on their own free will ,as a free American, to feed their wife and three hungry children, and realize all the risks involved – such as – know one has ever died from Carls meat , unlike the meat at the store- sign the piece of paper, add it to all the other piles of paper’s we have to sign for stuff to appease our attorney/polititions and be done ?
Why do we let them intimidate us so much, “they” can’t stop a million small farmers and ranchers from doing business unless we let “them”, “they” are all about legal documents, thets give them one, post it on here and every other small- organic-whatever websight and get back to living and doing our thing without having to deal with “them” so much.
Any attorneys out there willing to add to our freedom instead of take from it?

my two cents on 372 xp’s, they are great saws i’m on my forth one ( 7th moter), i converted all mine to run on .325 chain with the biggest sprocket i could find, and Carlton chain which to me seems to stay sharp WAY longer than anything else I’ve tried. a sharp 395 in big spruce and fir is hard to beat though, when bucking logs for the sawmill or cuting rounds for firewood I always reach for a bigger saw. ” there is no replacement for displacement” (Madsons cataloge) and I would add -Sharpness.
My only complant with the 372 is that the little spring clips around the starter pully get gumed up a lot and don’t catch when you pull, happens alot in cold weather anyone else have this problem – and maybe a remedy ?

Farrier, what state are you in ? Here in Colorado it sounds about the same except the big mill that used to buy everything here in the south went under. one thing that works good for me and the pace of horse logging is to load the logs on my trailer with a skidd steer, it takes a few more trips to get mobilized but if you are in one place for a few weeks it is worth it. a good tandem dually goosneck can haul 8-10 tons of logs, but you have to get a CDL for anything over 5 tons.

we usualy have to take two trucks, the dodge for dependability to pull the gooseneck, the F350 to get into ugly spots we shouldent be going to anyway with water and sawmills – horses don’t seem to have a problem getting anywere- maybe I could pull the woodmizer with them? anyone have any ideas on how that could be done? ( about 6000lbs with trailer brakes that could posible be hooked up to battery? ) . This is a job we skid and cut Ponderosa Pine for a cabin not 1/4 mile from were its was build.
Bob, I really like your set up -that might work on my flatbed, can you post a closer up photo of the inside and ramp setup ?

    Thanks Scott,
Interesting ! might have to put a lift and beef up the rear end of the goose neck a little, but that might work, it would stress the crap out of me the first couple times for sure.
I used to see some old boys with a saddle horse on there truck flatbed also with a home made lookin pen welded up to hold the horse, think that would work for a draft? you would need a pretty big ramp though.

Cool Video – Horse in a box truck ? awesum! I have been trying to think of a way to get horse and saw mill transported in one shot for awhile now, i even thought of seling my woodmizer and get a Peterson to put in the back of the gooseneck behind the horses.
