Good Luck with your oxen team. “What’s old”? I bought my Jed & Grey when they were 8 years, now they are 16years old. I had them in a yoke a few days ago, they are still doing OK. My Frank & Jesse, which I got from Howie, were 1 1/2 years, now they are going on 13 or 14 years. That make me going on 70 this year. I never thought I would be doing such wonderful things with my “guys”. We have met so many nice folks when we take them to our local events. Usually, we don’t travel more than 50 miles with them.
    Enjoy your new boys.

Don’t worry about the looks from family….we’ve all had them. My family thinks I am totally NUTS with my oxen craze. I’m happy, so I don’t worry about what they think.
    Have fun!

Dates for the events planned would be good. I know there is something in Sept. I already have a conflict with that.
If anyone is interested in joining the Hudson Valley Draft Horse Assoc. for a spring plow April 28, Accord, NY. Please let me know.
Don’t be fooled by the name of the group……it’s not all horses. Everyone is welcome, with or without livestock.
This site is great. Keep up the good work.

Been there, done that. Last year, November, I fell on the slippery mud with “Frank” pulling a log. I fell on my left upper arm, muscle. I could not get up off the ground. Frank stood patiently, while I screemed for my husband. Luckily, he heard me. He took Frank back to the yoking area, put him in the paddock, while I waited on the ground for help to get up.
Hubby, finally, brought a bench for me to sit on, then he had to help be onto my feet. I could walk to the house, about 200 ft. I was in agony for several days. We had an electric recliner, which I slept in for about 6 weeks.
No broken bones, but a severe trauma to the muscle. All muscles are needed for the slighest movement…not fun!
My wonderful chiropractor worked on me several times a week, until mid January when the muscle released the stress, back to normal shortly after.
That is the price we pay for working with large animals. My “boys” are very, very good, but stuff happens.
I could not blame “Frank” for my injury, the ground was very muddy, like slime.
Yes, thankfully, hubby has learned how to drive the oxen, eventho he’s a tractor guy!
I am back to normal and able to drive the oxen by myself again, I’m only 69 years young, …..keep your chin up….don’t worry, be happy!

I have a sincere interest in the group, however, I am not that close to the core group. I am not a spring chicken any longer, but do a few things with my oxen at local events. I am very involved with the Hudson Valley Draft “horse” Assoc. I say “horse” because I am there with my oxen and others have mules. This is a real fun group, lots of older folks with years of experience, but they are aging, some no longer have animals..
If you have been to Tunbridge when I was there, you know me and the kind of support I can give you.
For more info etc. you can PM me. I will PM Ethan very soon.
Have a Happy Thanksgiving to all!

I offered to hand out fliers/info at events I attend with my oxen. I am in the Hudson Valley of NY. I did send an e-mail to Jean. I have not heard back. Is this something you would like me to do?
Also, the Hudson Valley Draft Horse Assoc. will hold a spring plow in Accord, NY on April 28, 2012. We would like to have more draft animals join us. This is free, open to the public with some vendors, food, plowing, etc. If anyone would like to join us, please let me know. We are open to suggestions. Last year it was well attended. There will be dry camping space for anyone wanting to spend the night with their animals. Perhaps this could be a joint venture.
Feel free to contact me for more information.
    Thanks,
    Robin

Howie’s team did not sell at the auction. He may still have them. They are just wonderful. Hope someone buys them before they go in his freezer. They are exceptionally well trained. I have four of my own, but don’t think I haven’t been thinking about them. I tought of the pecking order process with my 16 years olds here, makes me think twice. By the way, Howie has a new e-mail address.
You can PM me for it.

A year or so ago, I requested literature about DAP to hand out at events that I attend, also inquired about helping with mailings, etc.
I was to receive the literature. Never heard a word more….no literature arrived, nor did I hear about my request to help with the mailings, so………that was the end of that!
I do some local events in the Hudson Valley area. I would be willing to hand out any literature available.
We also do a plow day in the spring. If anyone would want to come to that with items to sell, bring draft animals, etc. I am sure that could be arranged. Stay in touch!

Get in touch with Howie Van Ord. He is in Russell, Pa. If he has time, he will be very happy to help you. I believe you have his #&e-mail. If not, I can get them for you.
I am in Orange County, NY. You would be welcome to stop by here, also. No fee, just help the next interested person. Send me a PM if you are interested.

I’ll see you there with a tear in my eye. It will not be the most wonderful day, but I guess health issues are forcing the sale.
I hope Pat & Willie will go to someone in our oxen family. They are a wonderful team.
We are bracing for Irene at this moment. Just hope it isn’t as bad as they say. We are boarding up our windows, just in case.

    Howie,
I hope you are going to sell Pat & Willy as oxen. They are a great team. Haven’t heard from you in a long time. What will you do with yourself????
Frank & Jesse are still doing well. I’m still glad I have them.
    Take care.

    Hi Vickie,
I will be thinking of all of you this weekend and look forward to seeing the photo’s.
Enjoy. Hope Howie will be there as I haven’t heard or seen a post from him for some time.
Please give my best to all who remember me.
I am still involved in local events with the oxen. Jed & Grey are aging, but still willing to do a few tasks. We take Frank to several events a year. Jesse gets to stay home!
Will I see you at HPD???? Hope so.
    Regards,
    Robin
