Jack Strode has been dead for nearly twelve years, he was 73 when he died. People claim that he broke lots of mules that he never saw. So this bunch of mules in Idaho that you’re referring to, the odds are real good that he never worked any of them. The man is right about the mules being their buddies, they’re not supposed to be that, they are a beast of burden. Somebody referred to them as slaves, and that might be true, but work is what they are supposed to be here for. They are not here as partners, there is no relationship or friendship. Someone suggested that they are broke by submission, which is true, and to quote Jack, “if they ain’t afraid of you, they ain’t goin to mind you”. The pet mule the man referred to is just like he said, they are the hardest things to deal with because they have not respect for you. To quote Jack again, “one like that, you gotta whip ’em wild, then break ’em”. Too many people try to interject human feelings into animals, and thats not the way it is.

i worked with jack strode trading mules selling and breaking mules i raised a lot of mules and sold jack several mules i had made it to high school with my mule breaking jack carried me on to college he did whatever was needed to get the job done it was left up to the mule as to how harsh the method might be he did not wisper nor did he talk loud the video is just a very small part of his tricks and really only for people with not much experience handleing mules if he were still living he would get a big laugh out of some of the methods that are tried these days he would say that fellow going to get killed he took many spoiled mules and made them in to good work mules ronnie tucker tn logger

these mules are broke this way they are use to work this is a regular regimen for them my stock are not used for an occassional wagon ride or to plow a little for fun at 57 i my be considered an old timer if so then so be it but so many on this forum do not realize the potential of their work animals if you are sincere in draft animal power and willing to work and train them the results will be significant you have to learn what they will do for you when i am in the woods i dont have bmws or joggers to deal work is what it takes to make a dependable work animal ronnie tucker tn logger

no one is on the log cart you use a saddle on the near wheel mule the off wheel mules hitch rein is tied to the mule i am riding if the saddle mule needs any attention i use the bridle rein now to the lead team i have 1 line to the lead mule which is the one on the left if you use this method instead of check lines you have your right hand to use on the wheel team or to work the brake rope if you are using a wagon i have drove four mules with lines on all of them but never in the woods and not by choice i normally carry a whip on my shoulder it is mainly used as encouragemrnt if need be i once drove 14 with one line we were just p[laying we were going to try twenty but my freind jack strode did not make it with with his 3 teams so i drove 14 if you break your mules like they should be driving with one line is not that hard and by the way you can break a horse this way as well ronnie tucker tn logger

we dont work in snow but mostly we turn our mules loose to go to the log pile or landing or to the truck or where ever they are supose to go with light logs they might be a little fast but if you go and come enough they will slow down with bigger logs the mules will stop and get their wind i have drove 1 or 2 or 4 walking behind them sometimes i use one line on them and especially when i start out breaking them but as far as being safe if you are out of the way you cant get a log pulled on you horses do seem to want to go to fast more so than mules ronnie tucker tn logger
