well is the 051 and 011 pro saws?
The 051 is a pro saw, but it is OLD. Parts might be a problem. I would like to cut with one just to see what they were like but I wouldn’t want it for a working go to saw. I don’t know about the 011.
If I was looking for a chainsaw for firewood or whatever I’d try to find a 361 Stihl. If your only cutting your own firewood its the last saw you will buy. Even cutting much more than the average homeowner a 361 will last a good long while, then you simply rebuild it. Best saw for the money.Edited to say I looked up the 011 out of curiosity. Its not a pro saw.
SaxonParticipantI use Stihls. Ive tried many other brands but Stihl saws last longer and can take the every day workload of cutting two or three tri axle truck loads of timber a day. But Stihl makes two kinds of saws, homeowner saws and pro saws. Im talking about the pro saws.

Don’t remember how I found it. At the time the guy I was cutting timber with quit to do something else. So, no teamster, no horses. Im not a teamster so I was laid off and out of work.
Anyway, when I saw this list I was curious to see if any one from PA. that I knew was on it. There was. Saw a name I remembered from about 7 years ago when me and an old horse logger from way back cut some timber for him. I shot him an email to see if he remembered me and if he had a teamster that needed a faller. He did remember me, and he had a cutter going away for a few months and needed a fill in. I start cutting for him the day after Christmas. That ought to keep me busy while I find a teamster to work with.
It pays to network, it really does. And thanks again for the list Scott, Merry Christmas.December 23, 2012 at 2:28 pm in reply to: Logging, need an experienced person with a good team. #76287SaxonParticipantSaxonParticipant@Countymouse 38424 wrote:
Welcome Saxon,
We are probably not far apart, I live east of new castle, about half way to 79. Where exactly are you in western pa are you?We are close. Im near Cochranton not far from I79.
SaxonParticipantWith the log showing no sign of decay above where you bucked it off it’s good to go. I’d send it in. Many hemlock logs lay around a good long time before they are sawed and are none the worse for it.
As for the scale question, well, that’s a good question. I think you do better in the long run sending in the 20ft. logs.December 22, 2012 at 12:55 am in reply to: Logging, need an experienced person with a good team. #76286SaxonParticipant@Scott G 38374 wrote:
Check with Jim Axtell in PA. He’s the real deal and a true gentleman to boot.
Thanks for your reply Scott. I’d like a chance to work with Mr. Axtell, his reputation proceeds him. Unfortunately he is on the other side of the state from me. We couldn’t be much farther apart and still be in the same state.
I believe I will contact him any way and see if he knows any one out this way that might be looking for some work. - AuthorPosts
