Ok, You have all confirmed my thoughts as to “what the heck is he doing that for?” I don’t personally do any logging but have taken down a few trees and have found the latch and hinge to work very well. I do have to agree with Scott, that might be the most entertaining way to take down a tree!!

Here is the answer to your troubles. With a 3pt hitch on a forecart and maybe the trash wheels, you would be all set!! Foot note, I have no idea if this would work or not!!

But for the 3 or 4 billion people alive today who would not be alive in the first place were it not for the haber-bosch process, there is no imaginable constructive civic response. Not even a drastic worldwide re-adoption of animal power, permaculture, urban rooftop gardens, whatever. The numbers don’t add up.

Erik, I agree with your thoughts as well. I guess my post was more of the romantic dream type, but as you point out that type of result would only serve to be a nightmare.
My wife and I have had the “what if” conversation where oil ceased to be a viable option. Power plants stopped production and transportation (boat, train, and truck) stopped running. Would WE have the knowledge, skills, tools, and equipment to survive? Who would you align with? Neighbors? Family? Friends? What kind of mass exodus would there be from the cities. People just looking to survive and feed their family. How would you protect what is yours? What would be the method of payment? Barter only? Sorry, my thoughts tend to wander being cooped up in the winter. I don’t have the option of winter “work” for the horses so I tend to dream a bit too much.

Here’s to a Happy and Prosperous New Year to all!!

In searching I found this website that has some very nice PDF’s of the Varmlands Harness. A good harness maker could make one here in the states with just a copy of these.

If fuel prices stay elevated and/or rise to the $5.00/gal range, would that not force the general public to buy things local? And in that end, would it still be feasible for foreign industry to import all the things that are imported now? Would this bring local business more opportunity to gain market share? Less shipping of produce and meats over 3000miles, even to complete other countries? It would seem that local CO-OPs, farmers markets, and local crafts people would all benefit. And with people using less fuel, there would be less dependence on foreign energy products. I guess what I am trying to say is a huge price increase in fuel might not be as bad as CNN (communist news network) FOX, and the rest of the fear mongers would lead you to believe. In the long run, maybe even a good thing.

    With DAP, Anything is possible.

All kidding aside, this is the best forum I have found with down to earth people of like minds. Although I do not post often, I read every day. Some days 3-4-maybe even 6-8 times a day. I literaly read every word written on DAP. With that being said, I have learned a vast amount about many things. I have come to know, enjoy, laugh and cry with almost everyone who posts on a regular basis. Every year I am green with envy when you all can get together for NEAPFD, and SDAD. I could go on for hours about the things I have read and learned here, but I won’t. I just wanted to take this time to say thank you to Carl and Lisa and everyone else involved from the day to day, to the large sacrifices that they make. You make the world a better place.

    Thank you, Gordon

I was not able to attend like I thought I would.
Bob, were the sorrel mules the that sold the same ones he used as a lead team? If so, someone walked away with one heck of a good team. Almost should have them arrested. Why is it when I go to an auction, everything goes high! How far are you from Hillsdale Bob? I am about 15miles south of Adrian, Mi. Not that far from you I think.

Some very nice equipment and some mules that you will travel a long way to find better. A wonderful teamster who had great pride in his stock and equipment. He will be missed. The link now has some online photo’s, take a look.

Interesting post that raises a couple of questions in my mind. Is the length of a corn binder pole as critical as it is on a mower? And, not knowing what “type” of horses you are using, was the original pole made for the older “chunk” draft, or more of the modern hitch horse that would maybe have a longer body and longer stride?

    AMEN to that!!

My wife and I only have 3 more years till our youngest is out of high school. We are currently looking at living smaller as well. I could go a lot smaller than what she wants to do. In the end I think we will end up around 700-1000sq ft.

Keep pushing, you will get there.

The CDC article/publication was an interesting read. It does make me wonder of the people here in the states raising goats/sheep/cattle, are we having the same type of outbreak here? There are not a lot of large livestock operations near where I live. But there are a dozen or so “Mega Dairys” within 30-40miles. Is this an issue in the dairy cattle as well?
