I opened the cart link and liked what I saw. I wonder if in resurrecting this old thread… someone who posted they built it can tell us something about how it functions for them. What they’d do differently etc. Thanks in advance. ~ Larry
WolfscoutParticipantIt’s good to see young ones starting out.
I’m going to have to do learn all this in more depth.January 6, 2012 at 11:25 am in reply to: Invitation to Join All Things Oxen New Facebook Group #71098WolfscoutParticipantI clicked to join on FB. I don’t have an oxen yet. But I’ve been wanting one for a long time. At first I wanted Water buffalo for my oxen. But I nixed that idea some time back. So far … I”ve not moved on it. Hopefully this new year I can find the time to find a good calf to start with.

There is a team of water buffalo working at a living history site in South Carolina. I can’t recall the name but you can probably google your way to it.

Yes, I found a news article link to there.. will search more.
The Middleton Place plantation in South CarolinaMiddleton was the first place in the United States to use water buffalo to work the rice fields before the Civil War.
…
Until word of the Middleton letters, it was thought there were no water buffalo outside of zoos in the United States until the 1970s, said Hugh Popenoe, president of the American Water Buffalo Association. Currently about 20 American farmers have herds of 30 or more, he said.Yep, I got more research to do.
WolfscoutParticipantI used to use a team of billy goats. But when I had to have the rest of this land cleared I got rid of the goats. They worked even when not in team as they cleared the underbrush.
Now, I’m wanting to go into Oxen as my power source. And like the OP, my fixed income budget and being disabled have not allowed for a tractor and it’s implements. I’m still learning more before I go get my first steer though.WolfscoutParticipantI’m not much of a poster here yet. I mostly read and learn.. But there is a bit of fear mongering of privacy online for good reason. The problem lies in people who give too much information out. so I agree with Phil, if you won’t give or publish that information in your local town = don’t post it online.
WolfscoutParticipantThis is nice .. I’d love to see it on video.
