Flying Plow Farm seeks 2 full season apprentices for 2015. Apprentices participate in a formal and hands-on curriculum in draft animal power, sustainable vegetable growing, small-scale livestock production, and small business management.
Modern housing and provisions from the farm are available. A sliding scale stipend based upon financial needs is provided. Length of stay is from January/February to mid-December.
Highly motivated candidates who are interested in starting their own farm business in the near future should apply. At least one year of commercial farming experience is preferred, but not required. An appreciation and enthusiasm for farm work in general is important.
Opportunities for an apprentice run on-farm enterprise are available as well as partnerships with the Beginning Farmer Training Program of Future Harvest-CASA.
Flying Plow is a diverse farm in Cecil County, MD just a mile outside of “downtown” Rising Sun with a primary focus of vegetable production for a 150 member CSA and 3 farmers markets.
There are 5 draft horses on the farm to help with vegetable tillage and farm chores. During the year the farm keeps 150 to 300 layers, and during the spring and fall months several batches of pastured broiler chickens are raised.
Finally, there is a small grass-based beef herd with a couple milk cows in the mix and a few pigs are raised throughout the season.
If interested please email your resume and a letter explaining your interest in agriculture to flyingplowfarm@gmail.com and you will receive a response with an application and more details about the apprenticeship.
