Do you think that system would run a 9′ bar mower, or even a 9′ haybine?

Hi Al, I think it is quite possible that it would pull a 9′ bar mower, but in most cases I would think just using the mower as intended would work better and be more efficient. I doubt that my cart would pull a 9′ haybine. Specifically I expect that it would be easy to skid a wheel (and plug the mower) if the going got tough or slowed just a bit. A 9′ haybine can definitely be pulled by a ground driven pto cart. I would just expect it to be a little heavier and need at least four horses to pull it.

With the ground driven pto carts I have seen the trade off is always the same. To pull a bigger implement you have to make the cart bigger (heavier). Best to brake the jobs down into categories like light and heavy, so you don’t end up using a heavy cart for a light job. I would consider these carts (mower conversions) light and perfect for rakes and tedders; anything else we would have to try it and see.

PTO cart update, Not working too well with my new larger hay tedder, This winter I bought a New Holland 17.5 foot tedder. Maybe it is too big? but I have friends pulling the same tedder with the I & J. The hay is heavy and wet, but that is what you want a tedder for. It works great for a little while and then it just starts to drag the wheels and pile up the hay. I think I will try to add some weight. It is hard to go back to the Grimm ( a good tedder) after you have tried something 18′ wide! Made a lot of hay this week.

    Hey Donn:

Sorry to hear it is not working well. Is that New Holland the tedder in the picture attached to your first post or a different larger tedder? When you wrote that it drags the wheels, do you mean on the cart or the tedder? Have you tried adjusting the teeth up on your tedder? I am especially curious b/c I bought a 15′ Fahr tedder last year and have a #9 that I am planning on converting to a PTO cart. The Grimm works ok for me on a light second cut, but not in this thick first cut. I figure it adds a day of drying time compared to a modern-style tedder (not to mention extra time).

Hay Donn sorry to hear the disappointing news ,thanks for letting us profit by your labors. We got some hay made too ,not easy even on our driest ground and low day time high temps . My maintenance program for my 25 yo baler is showing knife spacing double recommended ,plunger head bearing showing serious signs of slop . I guess I should have rebuilt last winter , always 20 /20 hindsight ! Anyway Good luck with the fore cart ,methinks Mr Thomas Edison will be looking over your shoulder and admiring your spirit of invention not to mention persistence , good luck Karl
