I’m looking at a “fixer-upper” IH mower (that’s about all that’s left out here) and am trying to discern whether it is a 7 or 9. It is an enclosed gear unit and has the remnants of the bearing setup on the pitman stick so I am fairly confident that it’s one of these 2. But I don’t see any number cast into the frame (that’s how the Big 6 I have is marked). The enclosed gear case looks flatter than the pics I can find of #9s and it bolts on – Any thoughts on what I’m looking at or how I might better tell?

Again – I think the 9’s had a plate riveted to the frame that could easily have been lost. Can’t find too many (or any) pics of #7s – looked through all my old SFJs and even L. Miller’s HAying w/ Horses book – no luck.

    Thanks for your input.

big difference is where the gear box is located. on the 9’s it was moved back to take weight off tongue

Unidentified mower, Your comment about the gear case being flatter and bolted on makes me suspicious that it is neither a #7 or #9. Sounds like a early transition from open gears to closed. Can you take a picture? Donn

Well – I went and bought it – the price was alright I guess. Forgot to bring my camera but will pick the mower up next week. After looking again, I wouldn’t say the gearbox is all that flat. It does bolt on though – does a #9 do that? As far as placement goes – the gearbox on my #6 sits farther back than this one. Does that help any? I’ll try and go over and get some pics for you Donn (it’s only a few miles away).
