Well found out our old war horse is actuly bomb proof! While working in the woods near the clear water dam we heard jets coming in the distance and in no time they were right over head at tree top level making a fake bomb run on the dam I think but the boys and I all and got the crap scared out of us but old Galahad just looked up and shook his head like that was a big bug and stood his ground and waited until we were done jaw gacing about what was going on and finally got back to hooking up too the log we were ready too move

About three weeks ago I was working in front of a elderly WW2 veterans house. This man was 87 years old and he told me some stories of the town and the war. I can’t remember the country he said he was in durring the war but aparently you could have more than one wife, he said this farmer would come out in the morning to plow with his mule. Before he would make a pass with the plow he would have two of his wifes walk ahead of the mule to check for land mines. I guess wifes were easier to replace than mules. That mule wasn’t bomb proof.

That is sad and funny all at the same time. Usually don’t see those two attributes used together. 🙂

this summer I could enjoy a coachride (5-in-hand) across the Alps. Upon arrival in Chiavenna the city had arranged for a big party on the central marketplace. Police escorted our coach through small medieval streets and lots of excited people into the city center. Even from a distance we could hear the loudspeakers with enthusiastic Italian voices booming and the instant we turned in the piazza to stop in front of the stage they set off their fireworks with an extremely loud bang/report right above the horses heads – even we were dumbfounded 😮 . Not one of our brave horses did one step out of line (as they were just being slowed to a halt) but when we climbed off the coach one of them was just trembling and quivering with fear; it took us ten minutes of soothing talk and gentle stroking to calm him down again………

We did a job a few years back for a company that owned and worked a stone quarry. We worked right up to the face of the quarry all around which was not easy as there was no railings just a straight drop for a couple of hundred feet. They also blasted the quarry face 3 times a day, we were warned half an hour before blasting and were not allowed take the horses off site as it would have involved a 3 mile round trip to get them off site. The maximum distance we could go back with the horses was about 40 meters. When they blasted it shook the ground, gave us pins and needles for a while but never bothered the horses. I insisted in cutting everything in to 3 meter lengths for safety reasons, long poles can roll and pull a horse with them. The site supervisor never came to see us working, said it made him nervous just looking up from below.
