Yes there are people in the world who are against horses:(. I personally love horses, especially drafts. But I have noticed a crowd in my area that thinks that “Horsey People” are kind “yuppified” if you get what I’m saying. My Dad really, really, really is against equines ( as a side note that is why ,if I wanna get into draft my only choice is oxen) he says that they are flighty, prone to illness, and unthrifty. Now I know and you know that “real” horses aren’t that flighty. I have met some horses that could have a .270 winchester fired from across their backs and not even flinch. So my question is,why are some people against equines?

Ignorance. But they don’t make it look too blissful.

No offense my friend but I haven’t met very many people who were against horses. Some folks don’t like them, others are afraid of them, and still more don’t really understand them, some doubt their efficacy; but I have not met very many who actively opposed them. I would hang out with them if I did. Donn

Maybe I didn’t word this very well. (Sorry:p)

I suppose what I should have said is that majority of people in our area do not see a use for horses (or other drafts for that matter) and simply don’t care about learing about them. They are also (IMHO) terrified of some change in the community. Being as they all run 300hp diesels on their farms they don’t think that you can do anything with horses. Maybe I was just venting,I don’t know…..

    they simply have no clue….
ever asked your Dad to explain his reasoning? could start a good discussion…..
no, don’t convince him of using horses, just try to understand….

R – no need to apologize. I wasn’t very diplomatic myself. I guess my point was I don’t loose a lot of sleep over them. I also believe that if they don’t look for change, it will come anyway. DH

I have run into many people who think we are nuts, as we start down a path that will hopefully give our farm the ability to run on 100% real horse power. Why? economics, and the fact that we get long better with horses than big noisy machines around here. We run a small farm and if I ever wish to reach my goal of farming without outside income horses, in my mind and by my pencil, are the only way to go. Right now things are not that bad, but fuel is “only” $2.78, as we all know that number is only going to go up. Okay I’ll get off my rant, thing is, do what you love, because life is short.

    Cheers,
    George

Some people are just ignorant. I don’t usually pay them much attention.

Yes a lot of people are ignorant but latly I have been amazed at the amount of people that are interested in what we do! A lot of the local farmers are asking quistions on how are the horses to work with and are they able to do a lot of work? And what it cost to feed and take care of the animals, when they here the cost of feed and what they will do I allways get the comment hay mabee there is a place for a team on my farm! Look out jhon dear:D:D

My favorite reply to the people that try to belittle me for the way I do things is to Ask them ” how much money do i owe you”? Usually shuts them up. For those that don’t ,they don’t matter .

Well having been a horseman for around 40 years now I have heard some anti-animal comments and attitudes. I must say it is a minority of folks overall.

I think the common theme of those that speak negatively toward animal powered culture is about jealousy, a very insidious and evil emotion.

Some of the folks that talk down animal powered culture are resentful that they don’t have the skills to work animals. It seems there is also a frequent resentment over the independence the animal powered culture provides for the practitioner. There is the issue of less investment up front which keeps one from being a slave to debt and in service to paying interest on loans to operate. That reality alone allows one to be more independent in your decisions about what you will do with your animals. You are more likely able to make your own decisions and not just work for the “man”.

Well I would continue on this, but we have a neighbor with animals out on the road in the middle of this terrible snow storm, we have to go help….so I will return to this later….

hope everyone in the mid-Atlantic is hanging on somehow…that’s what we are doing….

    Kind Regards,

Every animal, including man and woman, should earn his own keep.

I believe most people that say they don’t like horses are really scared of them. Besides whats not to like.
