Back when I was in my early twenties there was nothing that I wouldnt try. By this time in life I had been to Viet Nam, was town cop, worked as on ranchs breaking colts working cattle. I thought that I could wipe the world.
I had only been home a couple of weeks after getting laid off a ranch job for the winter. When I got a call from the county sheriff saying a bunch of cattle had gotten loose up near the state hghway. They were looking for some guys on horse back to help round them up. Trouble was that they had been chasing them for two days with trucks and snowmobiles and they were spooked. We found a small bunch in a slough about a mile from the road and started to push them towards a farm place so we could load them out. As always one of the guys was the drugstore cowboy type and started pushing them to hard and they broke, going every different direction. I shook out a lope and roped one and tied him down and went looking for the others. Manage to get a few more put together and got them to the farm and all but one went in , He decided to head out but I got a rope on him right
quick.
Now I am feeling pretty proud of myself by now, When a deputy drove in and said that there were some more about a half mile west in the fence row.
We found one in the fence row and he made a break for it, across a hay field with about a foot of new snow. Im in hot pursuit made a throw and missed , quickly built a new loop and made the throw missed again. By now the buddy of mine im riding with starts laughing and says knew those first two were lucky shots. Oh Yea I says while if I miss this time you haze him for me and Ill bulldog him. You havent the guts he said as I made the throw and missed. Without thinking I spurred my horse and the chase was on, I looked to the side and by buddy was moving into position. Cant turn back now I made the jump, droped into position and grabbed the steer and hit the ground . No problem if your in a dirt arena with a steer with horns but with a muley steer and a frozen hay feild and a foot of snow(cant get much traction). All I remember is snow flying everywere wondering why I did such a stupid thing. I could hear someone yelling HANG ON TO HIM, HANG ON TO HIM!!!!!! When the snow cleared and the steer stopped I could see Two of the other guys running up to help and my budddy leading my horse up saying I didnt think the Dumb A** would really do it.The four of us tied the feet of the steer and managed to loaded him in the back of a pickup and delivered it home.Later that evening the farmer took us all out for supper. He said how in the world did you ever get that steer in the back of that truck? We just picked him up and threw him. Probably still wondering about it. THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO WHEN YOUR YOUNG AND DUMB
