Good luck to all in Sandys path. My son is headed to Dover Delaware Air force Base in a few weeks but is home in Wisconsin on leave. He missed the storm by two weeks, anyway good luck to all.

5 days without power, only because we are the last 2 houses on the line furthest from the substation. But we did manage to take advantage of no power on the lines and harvest a few cord that WERE leaning into the road.

I just heard from a fellow DAPNet member on the Chesapeake Bay, they didn’t even loose power, but they did get 11 inches in the rain gauge, no flooding either and they are only 8 feet above the bay.

I hope everyone else has fared well, looks like the high population densities had the worst of it.

Well we survived Sandy’s devestation here in southern NJ. We are about 30 minutes from Long Beach Island (LBI). If you have seen any pictures in the news they got decimated. Its such ashame. We were very fortunate here. We were out of power for 4 days, which seems like nothing since people still dont have it and some have no home to return to. It was an adventureous night during the storm. I went out at about 1:30 am to fill the generator and saw the hay barn roof starting to lift off. Since hay has gotten a bit silly in price this year I figured something had to be done. So in the midst of 50 mph winds and rain coming down sideways here I was on an extension ladder nailing the roofing back down. Luckily the wind was at my back blowing me into the barn. In hindsight it was probably really stupid to do this, but hindsight is 20-20 and the barn is full of dry hay. The wife was pretty mad at me when she found out in the morning. But otherwise all the horses and everything faired well. The horses dont care to be locked in their stalls but they got used to it. Luckily we had about 400 gallons of water to get us through not having power. Our prayers are with the families that have lost loved ones and their homes. Please keep NJ in your thoughts.

NJ Farmer, how are the relief efforts going? I know there are lots of donations being sent, but enough, enough volunteers to hand them out? Enough soup kitchens, etc.? I know folks were without power for 9 days, some still out, then the snow last night.
I did donate some pet food, toothbrushes, blankets, etc. at the local Police Station which is a donation center. More trucks are heading down to the devastated areas between now and the weekend. Looting seems to be a problem also.
Our hay shed turned upside down. Actually, it was a two car carport with sides, etc. We had 50 round bales in it. Had to relocate them. Insurance adjuster was her Monday, so now we are in the process of dismantling the shed. The wind yesterday hampered the project, but all is secured until we can work on it again. Really not a big deal compared to many others. Take care, everyone

For the most part I think the shelters are well manned with volunteers. I did hear that Red Cross put a call to arms for CDL drivers. They had 100 trucks loaded with supplies but no one to drive them. Looting has been a problem along with idiots stealing folks generators. I think there is a special place in hell for those jerks. But for the most part Jerseyians have come together to help eachother out. The gas lines have mostly gone away. But it was pretty bad in the northern parts of the state. Some waiting 4+ hrs for gas. But if anything good came out of this people now know their neighbors.

Our round bales are 4×4. They stayed on the ground, the shed flipped over. We spent Tues & wed. taking the metal sides off, then the wind picked up. Dan secured the shed as it was tossing like a boat in water. He strapped the frame to a tree on one side and to the paddock fence on the other side. So far, so good.
Frank & Jesse were very concerned when this thing was blowing from side to side. Jed & grey could care less.

I missed the last post. I was in NJ today, some short gas lines. Some stations still closed due to electric power outage. NYC is starting gas rationing (odd/even thing) tomorrow. Rockland County is limiting gas purchases to 10 gallons. So far, Orange County, NY is OK. We had folks come to our house for showers and resupply gas tanks and containers last weekend. Power is still out in some places. Lots of trees down en-route to NJ today, road were passable. I did see several out of state utility trucks along the way, including a convoy with police escort. Lets hope everyone gets power back on soon.
Some are predicting power out until Thanksgiving. That’s a long time to be cold. Take care everyone! Robin
