Anyone seen one of these?
Looks excellent, my only reservation being about power in reverse – does anyone think they could manage to reverse with enough power (from a single 15.2hh animal) to put the spike in? Accurately! (with a forecart there’d be articulation to think about too!) I think we’d need a *lot* of practise…

if not able to accomplish it backwards, why not turn them around and hitch them to the deal “backwards” – facing the bale, that should be enough; have seen done so in difficult places with a haywagon to back up……
December 21, 2010 at 4:55 pm #64092Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantI think I know what you mean! Yes I was wondering if there were tricks like that…thanks!
December 21, 2010 at 7:14 pm #64099jacParticipantI wonder if the spikes could be swapped for 2 tubes of mabey 4″ dia and set up to just touch the ground and be set wider so they go under the bale instead of spearing it… would still reguire a bit of skill in the reversing department but wouldnt need the same force..
December 21, 2010 at 7:36 pm #64093Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantGood idea – wondering if I should just take the basic idea and get someone local to make one with shafts to get rid of the articulation and your suggestion aswell? He’s got a patent of some kind on the mechanism, but if I was just making it for myself it’d be OK right?
edited to add: not that I want to rob the guy of money, I think the idea is genius! but not quite right for me…
December 21, 2010 at 7:57 pm #64094Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantI’ve emailed to ask if I can commission one with shafts and bars instead of towbar and spikes 🙂 Great idea John you little genius!!
December 22, 2010 at 8:50 am #64095Nat(wasIxy)ParticipantIt retails at £1000 + VAT as is, but fabrication is completely flexible so if anyone else wanted one….? He put bars on the early prototype but had ground clearance issues, however he has designed it for crawling up mountainsides whereas our land is flat as a pancake so I think it’ll be OK…
December 22, 2010 at 4:53 pm #64097Big HorsesParticipantI really like that idea. The fact that there’s no engine needed really appeals to me! Always wanted to mess with something along those lines, but never have found the time yet.
The tubes to the side (instead of a spear) wouldn’t have to be so big… our round bale processor has that sort of setup, and they’re only about 2″ around, which would be plenty strong, as they’re not supporting the whole load each. Just point them out a bit at the ends, and they self guide the bale pretty well (at least on our processor). http://www.haybuster.com/hb/bb2650.html
JohnDecember 22, 2010 at 5:21 pm #64096Nat(wasIxy)Participantanother good idea – I’ve added that to favourites to show him, thanks
December 24, 2010 at 10:12 pm #64098DavParticipantThere are several people in the US who make the same type of setup have seen them with spears and slide under shafts.
