Hi I thought that you all might be interested in this motor draft mower from Chile. http://hund.cl/detalle.php?foto_id=111 It’s a bit expensive at close to US$ 4,000 . Here about the only people to buy it are the govt aid agencies who buy it for the campesinos and the Mapuche. The company makes a few other draft products as well, plows, harrows etc as well as this baler http://hund.cl/detalle.php?foto_id=63 the ultimate in low tech balers!!

Hey! Somebody already built the mower I was working on! Thanks for this. I had been googling all over the web for motorized mowers but I never tried a search in Spanish.

I think I can beat their price because my plan is to salvage from old broken down mowers the cutter bar and the parts that attach it to a new, lightweight frame and rubber tires, put on a longer crankshaft, then power it up.

That thing looks light enough that a team of Shetlands could pull it for a reasonable time.

I think there might be a BIG niche for equipment that can be pulled by ponies, because (a.) Most first-timers are intimidated by huge drafts, and (b.) they can’t afford to keep them on their small acreages.

As the economy gets worse and fuel becomes more and more unaffordable, more people are going to look towards self-sufficiency on their homesteads.

    Keep sharing ideas, DAP members!

Yes it’s really light. The ones I’ve seen being used have either been pulled by a team of oxen (Chile has a loooong tradition of oxen) or a single horse (no tradition of using horse teams) and occasionaly by a car!

I dug this new manufactured mower up on the web. It’s from a manufacturer in Kharkov, Ukraine. Looks a lot like a McD #9, eh?

No word on price, but I recall a thread where people were wondering if a factory could start churning out those old beauties. Well, there are still making them in Ukraine, LOL.

Here’s a link. http://www.ua.all.biz/en/g172403/ Who wants to order a container load?

I sent the link to my father, who speaks fluent Russian, to see if there was any more info. He said that despite them saying there was a full description in Russian there wasn’t much more to speak of, it did not look like it when I clicked over. He sent an email to the company anyway and asked about pricing and if they made any other draft powered tools. I’ll keep ya’ll posted if he gets more info from them.

Cool! If they can be brought over for a reasonable price, with spare parts, people might snap them up. I know that a good used, rebuilt McD #9 will bring $800-$1000 bucks, so figure double that for a brand new mower (if it’s as good as it looks.) I’m sure the Ukrainian factorymen would appreciate the work and the chance to get paid in hard currency.
