Corn Stover as Feed

Hi Folks,

I’m looking for horse diet advice. We Grow about 3 acres of sweet corn which post picking we usually bush hog, disc in, and cover crop. I’m short on hay and pasture and was wondering to what extent I could use this corn stover within the teams ration. Any idea what the nutrient value might be? I’ve heard its hard on horses teeth from my horse dentist.

We have a fair amount of sweet corn in the field which has gone by. This we usually pick out for the pigs. Does anyone have any experience supplementing a horses grain ration with starchy sweet corn? How should I go about introducing this to their diet? I was planning on chopping it up because I was worried they might choke on whole cobs. Is this a rational fear?

I have fed corn stover to horses with no Ill effects. It was not a significant portion of their diet though and it is usually only in the fall when we have extra. I also feed who cobs and know of other that do as well. I have never had a horse choke on anything. Sorry this isnt technical but a little never hurts.

Thanks for the info, I really appreciate it.
I’ve had a couple good conversations with friends in the area. It sounds like the key is limited amounts. I have been stripping the ears off for the pigs and just feeding the stalks to limit grain intake. Its crazy how sweet the stalks are! It gives them a ton of energy for afternoon work.
