This mare and filly belong to a member of the Green Mountain Draft Horse Assoc. The mare is a morgan/perch. He also has her sister, great pair. The filly’s sire was a belgian. This picture was taken when the filly was 3 days old. Sweetest personality I have seen in a young filly. Fred works the girls single and double. They are no more then 15 hands high.
The picture of the mare and foal I have two things to say I sold that team and they are part haflinger not morgan, and the foal is sired by the belgian stallion living water dallas. He was one of my main team members and I had bred both mares for a future team of mine, one of the mares aborted. They are really nice mares and are as sweet as they come. They do how ever tend to get “hot” if they sit too long.
Just a bit of follow up and additional information.
JoshJanuary 17, 2009 at 12:53 am #49063JeanParticipantThanks, that makes much more sense. Never did see the Morgan in them. I was just happy to meet that little filly!
January 18, 2009 at 2:42 am #49066becorsonParticipanti tried to attach pictures of my two draft cross mares. hope it works.
the buckskin is named Cammy. i got her in 1994 when she was about 3-4. she is just about 15 hands and about 1200 pounds (most of it is head!)
i don’t know her breeding, (any ideas?) she came through a “horse dealer” in northern Pa.
She was in foal when i got her and had a paint filly in March 1994. only cammy knows who the father was. i named the paint Maggie.they are both pretty good under saddle and in harness . a little willfull / spoiled, but not liable to shying or running away, etc.
January 18, 2009 at 2:50 am #49067becorsonParticipantoops, i didnt realize the picture of Maggie that i uploaded had “labels” on it .
here is a better one.January 18, 2009 at 12:40 pm #49069jen judkinsParticipant@becorson 4934 wrote:

February 14, 2009 at 3:08 am #49085WVDraftyParticipantHello. This is my first post. I’ve been reading here for sometime now. Just thought I would post some pictures of my 2 Belgian X QH. They are 5 and 6 year old full sisters. Approx. 15 hands, 1500 lbs. This is our first team of horses. I am interested in how the crosses compare to full drafts.
February 14, 2009 at 3:31 am #49083HeeHawHavenParticipantI don’t know, but yours look great! Real beefy! But, this is coming from a 5 mule, 1 horse owning guy. And, the horse is stout, but not 1500 lbs. Welcome to the forum. I’m rather new too!

February 15, 2009 at 8:44 pm #49057Gabe AyersKeymasterGreat looking pair of crossbreds man. They would be wonderful to cross with a Suffolk stallion. We have one over in Virginia if you are interested in reproducing them and having the offspring also be red…..and willing.
About half the horses we work in the woods are crossbreds of all kinds. Most are crosses of draft breeds on both sides, but several are lighter horses and drafts. They always have lots of vigor and can do the work. They are usually all the horse most folks ever need.
Let me know what you think about crossing to our Suffolk stallion?
February 15, 2009 at 9:26 pm #49059PlowboyParticipantExcellent pair of Crosses “Drafty”. If I was needing a team and found some like that I’d bring them home without hesitation. Jason is right you have plenty of horse right there for any farm work. Some of our registered Percherons aren’t much bigger than that and plenty handy around the farm and will perform well in the woods too! Enjoy them they are real nice. Jason is right if you ever wanted to raise colts his Suffolk Stallion would be a nice cross. I’ve seen him in person, nice build, great temperment and well broke. There are several pictures of “Rudy” on the Photo page.
February 16, 2009 at 4:46 am #49082Robert MoonShadowParticipantI’d be interested in seeing that cross, too. Rudy is one fine looking stallion & these two… it just seems a natural idea, huh?
I bet they’d also make some awesome mules, too.February 16, 2009 at 5:41 pm #49081GuloParticipant@WVDrafty 5947 wrote:

Horses just like these were responsible for most of the work done on farms here on the northern plains before the tractor. There were travelling pure draft-stallions brought around to serve the farm mares, whatever they were, and plenty would be quarter horse type. And these horses of yours were what resulted, and what did the work.
How do they compare to pure drafts? Pound for pound maybe stronger. That said, I doubt they’d pull as much as my 2200 pound plus Clyde/Percheron mare, but so what? They are field-tested under reality conditions – do or die! – and they brought in the harvest.
Beyond that, it’s all just a matter of personal preference. My Clydesdales won’t pull as much as another man’s Belgians, but they pull enough, and the bottom line is, i’d never trade ’em for another man’s Belgians. A horse doesn’t have to be the best, just good enough, and most importantly to me, it has to be the horse you want to work with, year after year. And as i said, history has shown that those horses of yours will be more than “good enough.”
February 17, 2009 at 2:09 am #49086WVDraftyParticipantThanks you guys,
Like I said this is our first team of horses. We are making progress as a team and keeping safety as number one priority. The mares were fat in those pictures , but a little sweat trims them down a little and helps the attitude. Hey you know what’s funny we e-mailed about Rudy last fall just before your RFD event. I am no expert on horse flesh but the suffolk looked to be a good match with our mares. Winter came early but spring will be here soon. I do some work in Southern WV near Bluefield and Princeton, don’t think that is to far from your farm. I would like to come one day to talk in person. I know I could use a well broke team to help train me and them. thanks againFebruary 17, 2009 at 2:14 pm #49078Git-Up-DocParticipantI have to agree with everyone else, those are a beautiful pair of horses, real nice colour.
I have a belgian right now and he also weighs 1500 lbs, he is quite light in the back end though.
If your have more pictures I would love to see them and Im sure everyone else would too.
