A publication called Draft Animal News out of the Univ of Edinburgh is apparently ceasing publication after 25 yrs or so for lack of monies. They primarily had articles related to draft animal usage in developing countries – including a lot on educating folks on proper and humane treatment of their animals. They may still publish online and it is certainly worth a look.
In fact, I just read a piece in DAN about “mine ponies” in early 20th century UK. Some operations stabled and housed them underground and would hoist them out if there was a strike or holiday. When the ponies were above ground the story said it was quite a community event and folks miners would bring family to show them their working “partners”. There could be 50-100 animals pastured until the strike ended. The article also states that some of the first regulations for humane treatment of animals, with inspections, came in the early 1900’s regarding these mine ponies.
