I just had to get out yesterday and test my new woods road on a side hill. I had a friend coming over and had some extra time after hitching, so I got to test my new road with what I call the “war wagon,” a near-indestructible used competition cart that’s been modified to bounce off trees and roll over lots of things. Turns out my road works great, so I went to try out another trail section, this one ledgier and not of good footing. This was more exciting in the cart, and a wonderful show of just how good horses are at knowing where to put their feet. We got out of that short section and onto the established trail and wait a minute, but there’s a tree down in the way. Seeing some space around it, around we went, and caught a 3 armed piece of brush that was hidden in the leaf litter. It got itself caught behind my near horse’s left leg, in front of his right, between the legs of my off horse, above his evener, and below the wagon. It was tied in in a few other places too. This was one of those limbs only about 1-11/2″ diameter, but what a tangle. I love my horses they just stopped and stood and I thought ‘Oh Shoot.”
I have to brag about my team they stood still for me even as I sawed off pieces using a folding Sven saw I keep on the wagon and pulled the pieces out from around their legs. 10 minutes later we were ready to go again. I’m glad they are so steady and no one got a punture wound and they didn’t take off while I was fussing with the branch.November 15, 2011 at 1:49 am #70051bradleyModeratorcan’t wait to see them down at the farm school for our logging get together.
