So I’m real new to working with draft horses and last night I was leading Jim and Jack, my new Percherons, out of the pasture when one of my sisters yelled that Dad’s Jersey bull was coming. He was, right from behind, bucking and snorting and running. I had the lead ropes, both, in my left hand and a stick, for the bull, in my right. Well, he cut around the horses and came right at me- the horses were now jerking around and getting excited- and I swung that stick for all I was worth at his nose. He checked up hard about 4′ from me but bucked and bumped Jim. That set Jim and Jack off for real and I found out that no matter how hard you squeeze the lead ropes 4000lbs of horses are,in fact, still able to pull the ropes out of your hand and it will burn. The horses are real gentle but I guess it’s always good to look out for the unexpected…

Good for you for holding on as long as you did and for being able to do two things at once, hold the ropes of two horses and hit the bull on the nose.

I would say it is time to make bull burgers.

how were the horses once you caught them?

Yea he’s been edgy lately. We may have to get a different bull next spring. The horses didn’t run far, they kinda bolted about 25-30ft and once they saw what it was that had come up behind them they were fine.
