"Easy Cut" Update

Some of you expressed interest in the “Easy Cut” system http://sidist.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=category.display&category_ID=8&CFID=10899088&CFTOKEN=25729121&jsessionid=1230714f6ce2fdce8c58655d691f5f242133 that I installed on my MD #9 mower. Last year after spreading composted chicken manure at 2 tons/acre I had a lot of problems cutting semi-rank 2nd cut which I couldn’t get on early enough due to weather. This spring I replaced both ledger plates and the bar the tilts the knife (the bar that came with the mower was too short, thus keeping the knife tilted too far up).

These changes seem to have made a big difference. I have cut 750 bales of first cut this year with essentially no plugging (with the exception of operator error). I hope to have a haybine guard system on a 5 ft. mower (that I will be pulling with a team of smaller horses) up and running soon and will give the full review of both systems.

4-5 days of good weather coming – time to start mowing…………..

Thanks. Keep us informed. When I lived in KY, an Amish acquaintance who used that system told me it’s good, but not worth the extra money. He recommended I stay with the haybine guards.

Well I just mowed the first time with the swather guards and smooth sections. I put down close to 4 acres of very good meadow foxtail/timothy/clover grass hay. Some of this was down and lodged, some standing and heavy, some fine under growth. Seems like this worked well for it all. Even my brother the tractor man was impressed with how this mower got under that heavy hay and didn’t clog. The inside three guards are stub guards and I do like this set up. Especially with an inexperienced team that wanders a bit. It cut through the down hay well when we wandered over into it on the first piece.
I think I’ll stay with this set up, although I’m still toying with the idea of going with under serrated sections on my other mower.
