Hello all. This will be my first post to the forum, and my first baby step into Draft Animal Power. I’m a complete newbie to the subject, but have always been facinated by seeing a team of large animals (horses, mules, or oxen) do various forms of work.

I have a deep, soft spot for teams that work wood lots, because I always was facinated by those that had a sawmill, and used a team of animals to skid cut logs from the woods, to the mill to be used to make lumber for houses, barns, and the various outbuildings that made up all the working farms across the country.

Even though I m getting on in years now, I still love to learn new things. Skills that our great-grandfathers did every day, are disappearing more and more. I feel that this is something that we can’t afford to lose, and I love to see people that have a great understanding for the need to keep these skills alive, and then pass them along to others.

From what little I have seen and read so far, this looks like a great place to learn these things, and as time goes by, I’ll surely have all sorts of questions to ask a lot of you folks. Even if I never get to the point where I had my own working farm, with a team of animals that worked just about every day, I feel that any of the information that I learn, will not go to waste. I’m still pretty young, and stranger things have happened, and I’ve learned some other things that I would have never dreamed that I could have ever possibly learned.
I found out a long time ago, that even after you finish with formal schooling, you still learn new things all the time, and I passed this along to my son at an early age, so that he would understand the world and life a little better.

So if I seem to be ignorant on some of the points and ways of Draft Animals and their uses, I hope this will give many of you that I ask a question of, insight to where I am coming from when I ask.

Thus my first baby step has been taken, and I’m starting to move forward. I know that there are lots of stumbling steps ahead, but I’ll pick myself up, dust myself off, and keep placing one foot in front of the other again.

    Welcome Tim (?),

Ask away that is what we are here for to help each other strengthen the working draft animal community. These threads are searchable, just type in a key word above and a list of thread containing that topic will come up. Feel free to bring up (by replying to) an old thread for further discussion or clarification, or start a new thread. If you need any help just ask! There is also more information on our other website for our organization. DAP.com is our Forum, but http://www.draftanimalpowernetwork.org/index.html is our main site for Draft Animal Power Network, an educational non profit run by volunteers.

Thanks for taking that first step, we looking forward to you making many more,

    Erika Marczak
