It was such a beautiful day on saturday that we got the boys all harnessed and ground drove them around the farm where we keep them for a while. They did extremely well, better than the first time last year! They have not been harnessed since october due to the wife being uncomfortably pregnant.:o The nice weather and getting out of the pasture for a bit sure got them frisky when we put them back in the pasture. I was very pleased with how good they were, but also realized how out of shape I am!:D As soon as some of the mud subsides at the farm they will be getting a workout more often but for now once a week if the weather cooperates. We are having a logging forecart built so soon we should be working with that. It is just so amazing to be able to be a part of the whole harmony when we work together. I am very happy to be a part of this site and have learned a lot from reading other posts in here! I would love to try mowing and a neighbor up the road has parts for an old grader. We are trying to buy that to rebuild. They were going to pull it with an old crawler but it isn’t real big and I think two horses can pull it fine. Hopefully we will get a wagon this year to, but we will see how it goes! We love it and the kids are kinda liking it to! Keep up the good work here, and thanks to all

    Jen,
I know what you mean…. The little guys are chatching heck here as I am ready to start spring work. We went for a drive that lasted about 12 miles yesterday after a few days dragging wood out. It was lots of fun and I want to go again. Now the issue is getting another set of collars as they have sweated out of the ones I was using.

This isnt really a 1st drive of the year as we try to keep them all going thru the winter and manage to hitch most weeks at least once, but its the 1st proper work we’ve managed so far. The weather’s been unusually warm, with only -3 at night. We took the chance to start the drag harrows to try and repair the hay field. The fotos of me and my girls tell it I hope. Nearside mare, Ruth, is mother of the off horse, Belle, 11 and 5.. daughter up on the hitch cart is 11 too. Nice weather and a good team make for a poor excuse for work:)

Hahaha trust you guys to notice that:D.. Its actualy a ratchet lever off an old hay lifter that I plan to use to lift my seeder/slitter without hydraulics…remember that long debate we had about how to land drive hydraulics?? Well Im going to try a lever system. More fotos soon.

The weather hasn’t been to cooperative here. Not cold enough at night for the ground to firm up and is way to soft to get them out of there pasture to do much. We have rain coming this weekend so hopefully the rest of the frost will draw out and then the ground should firm up a bit. We sure do have a bad case of spring fever though!!! I will try to post some pics the next time we get the boys harnessed. They are an older team but they sure do a good job at making me look like I know what I am doing. They started out as a pulling team years ago, so we found out after I tried pulling some wood with them for the first time. As soon as the metal eveners started clanking and the chain was jingling they went a little crazy. I got the chain hooked to the tree and the evener and gave a little kiss and they were gone like a bullet!!! I called it all go and no whoa!! I wasn’t prepared for that reaction, but didn’t lose them or run them into anything, thank god! We told a friend of ours about it and he knew the horses and where they had come from. He also use to log with horses so he is going to help me get them in the woods. We have plenty of place to practice at the farm where we keep them so that is a plus! Talk to you all soon!
