I just put together a new seven foot knife for my self. I recently bought a used haybine knife for 20$ and most of the teeth were good. The back was straight and not worn. I put a new head on it, and replaced a few teeth. I used bolts, which I liked a lot. I did have to turn two bolts into rivets as the wasn’t enough room for nuts. You can see a group of photos here.

Jim,
If you are in a hurry to get started try asking the SFJ if they will ship the hardback edition at the same price as the paperback. That is what I did and they went for it. Of course about the time my book arrived we had a series of unfortunate things happen in our family, which has put the mower on the back burner for now. Oh well. 🙁
Regards …
