most were dead by 45….we had tiebuckers who would stack 2 green 9 foot ties at a time….they worked to the point that they beat their bodies apart….or drank themselves to death
March 29, 2011 at 12:40 pm #61516J-LParticipantWe still see lot’s of tie hack cabins and other things around here too. You’re right, they lived a rough life. Lot’s of them were Swedes.
We camp in the summer by a place called the Splas Dam. They used it to pool up water and flush the ties down country toward the rail roads. My dad was still finding ties stuck in the creek banks when he was a young man.
Lingodog13 on here found a lot of pictures at the county library pertaining to the local tie hacks. Very neat stuff. It’d be nice if she posted some.March 29, 2011 at 2:26 pm #61518Michel BoulayParticipantCool video these guys didn’t need to be coaxed to go to bed like we say they slep like a log. Amazing what a horse can pull in the right conditions.
Thats about the amount of snow we got this winter in just 2 months.
From no snow at christmas to 4 feet of the white stuff at the end of february. Had some warm spell last two weeks and it is going down pretty good but still a good 2 feet left. Here are a couple of pics. Snow got over the fence for a while.[ATTACH]1731.jpg” />[ATTACH]1732.jpg” />
