Hello All,
I live in northwestern Alberta, Canada. I run a small cow/calf operation. I have been around horses most of my life but draft horses are new to me. After twenty five years away from it, my son and I went on a “pack trip” into the Alberta Rockies. It was there that I saw a lot of people moving and supplying their Base Camps with teams and wagons. As a result I am now the proud owner of Pete, Slim and Shorty. Yesterday was the first time I hitched up. I have a lot to learn so don’t be surprised if I ask a lot of questions. It is a pleasure to meet you folks. I am going to attempt to attach a couple of photos.November 27, 2010 at 8:05 pm #63517dominiquer60ModeratorWelcome Grandad, you are in good company here, ask away!

To me they can save you a great deal of wear and tear on tractors or trucks (sure don’t have to tell a Canadian about cold starting diesels), not to mention fuel costs.
There are a lot of knowledgable and experienced people on here and they are very willing to share it.
Are you set up to feed cattle with your horses yet?November 29, 2010 at 4:16 am #63518blue80ParticipantHi Grandad, welcome!
I spent some time working on a dairy in Lacombe, and have some family up in Grande prairie but have never made it up there. Beautiful country, and some of the best people. Nice to get some more Canadian ( and western) influence on the site;) I’m from Ontario but now in N. Wyoming.Oilers or Flames?
Best, Kevin

December 3, 2010 at 4:16 am #63521GrandadParticipantThanks kindly for the welcomes folks. Sorry it has taken a while to respond but I have been busy weaning calves and getting them to market. The team in the pictures I attached (Slim and Pete) were purchased this fall. Their former owner passed away this summer and I got them from the fellows widow. The fellow who passed away had two teams and a spare horse. One of the teams was bought by someone else which left one team and a spare horse. When I picked up Slim and Pete the spare horse (Shorty) was very sad to see his friends go and I felt bad for him. To make a long story short, I wound up buying Shorty a month later. The horses were all glad to be together again and my guilt feelings subsided. At any rate my team now stands at three and I have questions about driving and hithching three horses. I’m not sure which forum to ask the questions in but I guess I’ll just pick one and ask away.
Thanks again for the welcomes.
J-L Not set up for feeding cows yet but I will be in the future.

I do small squares and round bales. Have set ups for feeding round bales that are easy enough to make and cheap (for us ranchers cheap is good).December 5, 2010 at 4:26 pm #63520RoscoeParticipantWelcome, good to see another albertan!
