Hi all
Ive decided to stick with the single guards on my number 7. I think they are MC2041.
What I wanted to know was what modern knife clips and wear plates (serial numbers) would be best? I have new under serated blades.
For alfalfa would it be best to use stub guards for the inner guards or could I stick to the single guards?
Thanks

I don’t know about serial numbers, but I like the single guards on my No. 9. The stub guards are nice on the inside end of the bar to prevent plugging with the already cut grass from the last round. BobDecember 13, 2011 at 2:43 am #70672JayParticipantRussel,
I also like the single guards you mentioned. Two or three stub guards on the inner end of the bar can be very nice. I tend to use the new adjustable knife clips – I get them from BW Macknair, though I’m sure others have them too. I have also used some of the older cast ones if they are not too worn, however I always put NEW ware plates under the knife when I rebuild a bar – they are not expensive and they make such a difference. Another thing to check if you are rebuilding a mower with some use on it, is the back of the knife bar to which all the sections are riveted. If this is not perfectly straight (no depressions where the ware plate ride) I strongly suggest replacing it. Doing so will save untold aggravation when mowing heavier hay. Hope this helps.
