Finished my welding job now I can afford a collar harness. Thinking of a nylon work harness nothing fancy just something I can use around the farm. and in the woods. Does anyone have any thoughts? Not sure if I should order one or have one made by the Anish or go to an auction.
Thanks EliNovember 24, 2012 at 4:20 pm #75879Does’ LeapParticipantEli:
I prefer leather and I would recommend looking around locally for a used harness. I have been able to purchase 6 harnesses over the past 5 years or so and have spent anywhere from $75 to $200 / harness. These were all harnesses kicking around in peoples’ barns and were all serviceable with minor repairs (on some). Perhaps you could try craigslist or put the word out. A new harness, especially leather, will cost significantly more.

Upkeep was alot less than the leather and it was sure nice to throw on a horse, as it was much lighter! We keep finding (or it finds us) leather harness, and there’s just something about it that I love, so that’s what’s hanging in our barn now……lots of it!

Style is a 10 GR All purpose Half Sweeney collar, 12 ½ inches wide. $50.00 each or $75.00 for the pair plus shipping. Will fit very thick necked horses, usually stallions that normally require a full Sweeney. http://www.broadheadcollar.com/collarmeas.jpg Shows how to measure for a collar
Two sets of 22 inch Farm Hames, bolt type black powder coated with Stainless steel balls in excellent condition. Complete with top and bottom hames straps, 2 inch roller bolts, and twisted links for breast strap snaps $55.00 each pair plus shipping
I’m going to see four sets of used farm hames that fit my 18 inch collars and would make someone a good deal on them. I’ve got a buggy hame set that fit the same collars and it has heavy leather traces sewed into it. If anyone is interested.December 1, 2012 at 10:55 am #75883EliParticipantI’m am off to look at some harnesses 4 hour drive but it sounds like what I need all leathe three strap britchen Amish made. 24 inch collar my only concern is my horse has a 12inch wide neck haven’t had much luck finding a used this wide. We tried a harness on Tenake (our prego mare) and it looked great. She stood perfect for the colar and harness like she has done it before we were told she may have been harnessed 10+ years ago. Scarlet was all wet so we will put her harness on tomorrow. We broke Scarlet to ride and ground drive this spring and don’t expect to many problems. Eli
