Hi I’m new here and I am really instresided in training some cattle to be oxen for my uncle and his son 10 acer farm that I help alot with. They got 6casterated beef bulls on it betwen 3 weeks and 2 months old and my uncle said that if i studyed and learn eavry thing I can then that he would help me out with seting up a spot to keep my oxen on the propperty. Now my question is witch breed would be the best choice for me to start with since I am pritty new to this. I had also brought the book Oxen a teamsters guide to study up on.

Welcome to DAP and the world of working cattle. You’ll find lots of info here. Check out some of the threads under “working cattle’.
The discussion has come up a couple of times. The consensus is, use what you have availble and what you like as a breed.
If the beef bulls are handy, you probably could start training them, just to get the hang of it. They already have a destination if it doesn’t work out. If there are some dairy type cattle around, you could start another pair after getting your feet wet with the beefers.

PS The heading here is “Oxen” for the threads. There’s some real good reading.

As far as I know there is alot of black and white dairy cattle around where I live, and the breed I would like to use and work with are Texas longhorns but when I think about it I worry if there horns will get to long to work side by side.

    Welcome,

Mother Kathrine has some good advice. I started working with a pair of beef last summer, a heifer and a steer, they have taught me a lot and can be very useful. I am making due with what I have for now and I am passively looking for shorthorns for a future team. Good Luck with your adventures, read what has been written here about cattle and feel free to ask questions.
