Carl,
no way you would have scared me 🙂
My hubby had a hard time “catching up” with all the animal stuff (horses, goats, dogs) after we married – I bet he thought it would be easier.
He’s completey hooked on this draft oxen thing, I came up a while ago.

On the main theam of the thread, I was wondering if highlanders would work well when it came to working in the woods during the cold and snowy winters? Would it be worth having two teams, one better suited in the winter enviroment and another in the summer heat?

In my case, my husband was brought up with sidewalks that wrapped around his neighborhood. I was the oldest of three girls on a poor dairy farm in Vermont which in my father’s eyes equaled “free labor”. So large animals have always been a part of my life. My husband is not afraid of large animals, but he does not embrace them either. He will “help” me with them, but it doesn’t go beyond that.
After reading the responses to my statement, I decided to have a discussion with my husband about the whole draft power thing. To my surprise he has already spoken with the forester that he deals with, about putting his operation on a “horse logging project”. We will have to call upon an area teamster to help us and hopefully use him and his horses on the job. According to the forester, there are some people who are about to lose their land use status due to non-compliance and these people would embrace the idea of horse loggers. Nothing written in stone yet…but a small step forward for my diesel, skidder operating, loving husband.
So, I would have to say that apparently Hell does freeze over!!! Because this is the first response I received about joining him in the woods with the horses!

There are women your age interested in your lifestlye, I have had a hard time myself. A mentor of mine, just turned 94, once told me that if I wanted to find someone to grow old with, than I would have to make myself more available. So I did, and it has worked so far, he is not a draft man, but he can see them fitting in very well with his corn/hay/egg/veggie operation. A hundred years ago his ancestors were well known for their milking shorthorns. His father has already offered a corner of the cattle barn to keep a pair of calves. You know, just in case I find myself (I currently live in an apartment) in a situation where I need to buy calves all of a sudden. I suppose its just pops way of saying that I am welcomed and could fit in. Anyway I know that there are indeed young folks looking for other ‘draft friendly’ halves, just open your eyes, get your nose out of the books/computer and get off the farm and look. They don’t have to be as crazy as we are, just support it. (that’s a royal DAP “we”)Erika
