Hi All,
Good to find you all. We are turning pasture back to forest in Costa Rica. Currently we have more than 500 acres of land in various stages of return. We used plantations trees to pay for the land and use the plantation trees as a nursery for the permanent forest. It is a long term process, but not as long as it would be up in the North. (things grow a lot faster down here)
I am very interested in Draft Power since we use horses to eat the grass between the trees. For 8 months of the year, using a tractor to do much of anything is difficult due to the rain and the softness of the ground.
We have excellent horsemen and a herd of 12 horses – at least. (it changes). There are lots of leather workers in the area who make saddles, etc. They can make the harnesses if they have any kind of example.
Traditionally they use oxen down here to haul with – but I would like to try horses.
Anyway, it is good to be on board. Hoping to share lots of stories and knowledge.

Very good quality land goes for about 3,000 dollars for 1.7 acres (manzana is the measurement here 7/10 of a hectare)
Ag crops would be bananas, plantains, pineappes, yuca in our area. Lots of cattle. In the mountains you can find most vegetables year round. Lettuce, brocolli, tomatoes, potatoes, strawberries, blackberries.
Papaya is raised a lot too.
