Hi everyone. We just found this great web site and had to be part of it . My name is John my wife Andrea and our daughter Caitlyn, hence the jac title.Anyway, we own and breed Clydesdale horses over here in Scotland .We dont farm as such but use our horses as much as we can on our field work such as harrowing and reseeding with my homemade slitter/seeder. I’ll post a foto or two soon… once I get the knack of this computer, I can hitch a team but am rather backward at this 21st century stuff. We also do wagon rides and promotional events with our team. The stable consists of 3 geldings and my mare and her 4yr old filly, she also gave us one of the geldings. Apart from the 3yr old gelding they all hitch nicely. In fact we are out with the wagon at Robert Burns cottage this weekend. We made hay {loose} for the 1st time last year and it was a great time for all the family. I’ll go for now but I have loads of questions for you folks andperhaps a few ideas as well. cheers

Welcome John, Andrea, and Caitlyn. We’re glad you could make it. Would love to see the pics.

One thing about this group is there are a lot of folks who are not ‘puter geeks (to put it politely), but we all seem to eventually get the hang of these things. One thing I find about farming and logging, and working with animals, is that when something breaks it often can have a second life ans a part for somethinng else, but these blessed plastic contraptions are only useful(?) when they work, and when they break they don’t even make a good boat anchor.

Good to have you here, Carl

    Jac,

    Welcome to DAP.

Rabbie Burns territory–you must be in or near Ayrshire then? What is the state of draft farming like in that part of the country, are there many other practitioners?

I’m from Vermont, but I’m going to Dumfries area in May to visit my wife’s family, I’d love to come visit you or anyone in your area farming with horses. Maybe as a new england draft power ambassador or something.

    Best, Erik

Hi Erik. You will be very welcome to visit our humble shack and share a home cooked meal with us, I do a mean Pensylvania Dutch chicken pie. Now.. as for draft horse farming in this area.. there is none. I am very much alone. I dont farm as such but use our horses to do harrowing and such. We made hay last year and will be again. Wagon rides and promotional work is undertaken to try and make ends meet. I made a slitter/seeder last year and if you make it to our door in May you can check it out. We have plans to do a lot more with our horses but unfortunately I seem to spend too much time working away from home to pay the bills and not enough time with my team:(.. John

Welcome to this board. I enjoy the international flavor we are getting here now. Makes for some interesting reading and different viewpoints.
I always wanted to visit Scotland. May never get the chance, so please post a lot of pictures.

Hi J L.. Thank you all for a real warm welcome. Wyomming is a place I would like to visit someday to. I was brought up in the 60s on a diet of saturday afternoon westerns and “The Virginian” was a particular favourite of mine. I believe it was meant to be set in Wyomming. If I had access to this web site and Lynn Millers books 20yrs ago what a difference it would have made to me. However im here now and will do my best to bug you all with constant questions:) Cheers everyone
    John
