I found in my neighbor’s 100 acre wood lot a structurally sound, but gear rotted No. 3 mower. I haven’t actually seen the gears, but I am sure this would be a complete rebuild. Assuming I could get free, would it be worth it? Does the mechanical improvements of the 7 and 9’s, make seem impractical? On the other hand I REALLY need a mower and am on a shoestring budget.

On a romantic note, this mower was found near the foundation of a rumored ‘pioneer’ farm. Left up on huge stone blocks under a very elderly maple, with the knife still in the bar.

I would feel comfortable with a 9 or 7, but I have never restored equipment before and am not sure it’s worth it.

Probably wouldn’t know until you got it out and checked it over. From what you said you could probably end up with a lot of $$ in it. That being said, I hate to see that good old stuff just rot away, could be a nice project… Look it over and see how bad it’s set-up.

I am almost finished refinishing a #3. I think it’s worth giving a shot. The enclosed gears are pretty tough and protected. I say pull it out and see what you’ve got.

I worked with Jay of LongView Farm on his #3 and found that most all of the critical parts are the same as the JD Big 4 (with the exception of the pitman crank diameter) and that can be taken care of with a shim. I suggest pulling the top off the gear box – 5 5/16 bolts that are easy to replace if they twist off. If the gears are not seized up it is probably doable. Jay
