Hmm, that’s an idea! I think my neighbor up the road has a router… maybe trade him some router work for some parsnips! He has some kind of worm in his soil that does a number on carrots and parsnips, so he can’t grow them.
Although, the thought of something permanently routered into the beam kind of alarms me. Paint is so much more… approachable. I could change it if I wanted to. I think I have a problem with commitment.
Know anybody with a plasma cutter? If so, have them cut out your name or your farm name or the plow’s name etc in a piece of mild steel, paint it in a contrasting color to the beam of the plow and attach with a couple of self tapping screws. If you get tired of it, chance it out for something different in a couple of years. If you make the sizes of the steel plate match you can reuse the screw holes.
February 26, 2010 at 6:02 pm #55351greyParticipantWhat, doesn’t anyone like my flames idea? 😉
February 27, 2010 at 12:57 am #55359near horseParticipantI’m with you grey – how about flames and the name “Tractor Eater”?
February 27, 2010 at 1:02 am #55380jacParticipantCome on guys, get real…. Flames would only work with chromed sidewinder exausts:D
JohnFebruary 27, 2010 at 1:16 am #55352greyParticipantI am considering riveting a couple of “4X4” emblems to the sides of my horses’ harnesses. I also saw “Heavy Duty” was available. Either one would apply.
We’ve got dual exhaust but last time I looked they weren’t chromed!! 😮
February 27, 2010 at 5:24 pm #55361dominiquer60ModeratorI have been looking through all sorts of pictures for the website that I am making. I came across some plow photos that I had forgotten about. I have a little ~4″ Planet Jr. plow that was part of the original boxed seeder and cultivator package. It fits on my modern Glaser wheel hoe. It is very effective at smothering out the in row weeds when you make a pass down each side of the row and hill in towards the plants. It is also good to use when we want to transplant a small amount, it makes a nice little furrow to follow. Since human power is technically animal power I thought I would add it.

February 28, 2010 at 7:46 pm #55353greyParticipantVery nice! Do you have the horizontal piece for the plow bridle as well?

No, but the future father-in-law has a very worn out oliver plow in his barn with all of the pieces I’m missing
March 1, 2010 at 5:55 pm #55354greyParticipantExcellent.

We got a spot of sun today so I thought I’d drag old “Buttercup” out and take her portrait.
She’s an 8″ Oliver 10N with a brand-new red oak beam. The beam that was on her was completely dry-rotted, as well as riddled with powder-post beetle damage. It was still in one piece, though, and I used it as a template for this new beam.
The share and the landside are both pretty badly worn, so she isn’t the easiest-going plow ever put to soil, but it gets the job done.
I was at a plowing event last weekend and someone told me I needed to get some stenciling done on the side of the beam. Whaddaya think? Flames? Pinstripes? Valvoline logo? 😮 😀 Somehow I don’t think that was what he had in mind….
how about ” Draft Animal Power” or ” REAL HORSE POWER” if your using horses, i guess that would look funny with oxen pulling.

August 9, 2010 at 6:28 pm #55362dominiquer60ModeratorI cleaned and painted this plow in March, but just finished the handles today.
It is a Syracuse 455 8″ single horse chilled steel plow. I hope to try it for the first time at the fair next week where I will have patient help for such matters.
