Has anyone else noticed that log prices are on the rise. In particular, hard maple seems to be in demand, but other species as well are in short supply up here. The mills seem to be looking for logs, which is always good news!!

This winter (the time of year I work in the woods) they stopped buying logs and laid off a bunch of folks. They recently rehired their entire staff and are desperate for logs. Things looking up all around? Here’s hoping….

I am looking for a good hemlock market. Can you give me more details? Thanks.

Yes, it’s not just you, I found prices significantly higher than 2 years ago, had a good load of Red Oak/Ash that I did well on. Hard Maple is very much in demand in these parts and it seems they are paying well.
The problem right now and how it was explained to me, is that so many people went out of business during the recession that it will take years for the related infastructure to recuperate. I don’t know about your area but I almost lost everything this winter with a couple loads of logs on the landing and couldn’t find a truck to get them to the mill to get the bills paid. Had to sell the logs to whatever mill could get a truck to pick them up, still did alright.
Looks like prices will be on the rise for the next while and until supply can meet demand there will be a premium. That’s how it was explained to me and it makes some sense.

I know of an outlet for hemlock as well, I can get you details if your interested. Local buyer to me just started buying hemlock for export to China. I haven’t received pricing yet, but I can get more details and a contact if needed.
I have noticed log prices increasing as well.

472-6373He is looking for large diameter Hemlock logs- has more post and beam orders than he and his son can keep up with in terms of current log supply.
I really like dealing with Dave.

Hemlock appears to be the only soft spot from my vantage point. red oak is way up, so is ash, and both hard and soft maple, birches. I sold a load of black birch to Green Crow in Andover NH and averaged over $500/mbf. Lets hope the trend continues.
~TomAugust 10, 2014 at 8:26 pm #83886Brad JohnsonParticipantI have been very pleased with pricing and scale on the last few loads, particularly the hardwood. Hemlock still is so hard to effectively market here in VT. Yes, if you have perfect post and beam material then it is worth it, but the smaller logs are not paying well at the moment. It is too bad, as there is so much hemlock in some of the lots I work on…
