Hello Folks,
I would really like to find a mentor teamster in my area of Pennsylvania. I attended an intensive draft workshop with Jay and Janet Bailey and their Suffolks at Fair Winds Farm in VT. I’ve been bitten by the bug of draft power and I’m hoping to find someone local who I can continue learning and working with. If anyone is interested please e-mail or call me. Also if anyone knows anyone in my area who might not see this, please pass along their contact information if alright with them. I live in the Lehigh Valley and am hoping to find someone within a half an hour’s drive. I may have to widen that circle but I’ll start there. Thanks and take care.
Sincerely,
Anton Shannon

I live in Monroe county about an hour north of you. I have a team of oxen that I use mostly for skidding logs and pulling carts but would like to branch out to try some farm implements also. Although I’m not mentor material as I know very little about horses at least you know there are some Draft animal power aficionados’ fairly close by, at the very least we could carpool to some Dapnet functions to save some gas! If your interested in logging with horses at all there are a couple of horse loggers within an hour drive of your area. I’m sure some more experienced teamsters will respond with better info, good luck and I look forward to see many more posts from your farm.

Thanks so much for your reply. A carpool up north would be great, we’ll have to pick-up Brett from Skoloff Valley Farm on the way. He and I attended that draft horse workshop, but only realized we both came from PA when we got there! Please be in touch if you are ever traveling to any events I might be interested in.It’s good to know you and others in your area are using draft animals. I’m hoping to go to a workshop Steve Burkholder runs in April in Leesport, PA. My farming partner lives out in the Kutztown area. I know with a little luck I’ll be able to find some folks that way to learn from. As for my farm, I’m rented land now and would be adding draft animals once I have a more permanent land situation and the necessary infrastructure for them. Take care and I hope you enjoy your winter.
Sincerely,
Anton Shannon
