mule plowing

It is time we had a new mule thread. I have just about finished trimming all the horses and mules so they will look good when we finally go out to work. One of my goals for April and May is to do alittle plowing. Like a quater of an acre. I am hopeing to use a four up hitch pulling the two bottom trailer plow. Any one that wants to come check it out/help would be welcome. I am really self taught as far as driving two infront of two and that was with different teams so this will be alittle interesting. I have everything I need to hook it up. Plowboy, anyone down your way feel like comeing up for the afternoon? I could throw in lunch.

When are you thinking of doing this? I would love to come watch. Not sure how far away you are, but I am always up for a drive.

I will be of no help to you as far as the plowing, or driving goes, but I can throw out encouragement and even bring a pie.

Hi Jean, If you aren,t already on your way to AK. I am in Cortland Co. NY. I am sure you can find much more interesting plowing closer to home, although like Joe I hate to discourage anyone form baking a pie! I don’t know where you are in VT. but if I was up that way I would like to go over to Erik Andrus’ to watch the plowing. If you end up in Central NY. I hope to be plowing in the second half of April but it could be anytime. I have about 60 spreader loads of compost witch are a higher priority once the fields dry out a little.

Let us know when and we’ll try to get out there. It’s a tough time for Dad to get away still doing winter chores and spring work and my business is getting busy too. I would definitely be glad to answer any of your questions about tandem hitches. We use the rope and pulley system available from Pioneer and White Horse and they are relatively inexpensive. As far as the driving of tandems the best advice I can give is hook to a wagon and spend some time in an open field until you get the hang of it, thats what we did . It pays to fasten your neck yoke on the tongue so it doesn’t drop out while you are working. If you don’t hold the wheel team back far enough they can get off the tongue. Put your faster animals in the front and hopefully they are broke to voice commands. Sometimes when raising or lowering the plow you need to drive with one hand and it helps if you can talk them into place in the return furrow. Once you get the hang of it and the animals get used to it it’s alot of fun to drive multiple hitches. Good luck and hope we can make it.
