NE world’s ice supplier?

There was a TV program last night (NOVA) talking about cold and refrigeration and the attempts to reach absolute zero and they talked about how historically, ice harvesting in New England supplied much of the world with ice for cooling/refrigeration. Ships hauled it all over even to India. I always thought that harvested ice stayed in the region, at least within the US borders but I guess it travelled well-enough. Mentioned 20% losses due to melting but some of the big guys made nice fortunes shipping ice. Also, they did have a few short clips of different ice harvesting techniques etc. Pretty neat.

I’ve wanted to do a horse facialitated ice harvest here in town at the local lake for a couple of years. I know there are oldtimers around here that have all the equipment and know how to do it. Would be alot of fun! Maybe this winter. Thanks for reminding me.

They do an ice harvest at Muster Field Farm in Sutton. I haven’t seen them do it, but my father-in-law has. In fact, he was a couple of old horse-drawn ice saws in his museum. If you have some spare time in the next month or so, take a ride down and I’ll show you them. He’ll probably be able to tell you a bit about the ice harvest procedures…..he LOVES to talk and show off his antiques.

They have an annual ice harvest in VanHornersville, NY. I think that the Grange packs it in the ice house and uses it for the summer ice cream socials. I have always wanted to go but never get the chance.

Brookfield VT has one every year. I took a team back in 1999, and used my antique Ice Plow. It was fun. I’ld do it again… as long as the ice is thick enough:eek:
