This Plow belongs to a friend of mine (I want to by it!) He painted it JD green but I am pretty sure it is not a JD. There are no markings on the castings except a few numbers. Does anyone know how to ID this plow ? It belonged to his Grandpa and he has passed years ago. I thought if I helped him find out, he would at least let me plow with it some day !!!??? Thanks

Wow – that is a strange one, Bill. I’ve heard that JD (and maybe other makers) made a retro-fit setup to convert walking plows to sulkies. I’ve never seen one nor do I know if it’s even fact but thought I’d throw that out there.

No number stamped on top of the beam towards the front?

    hi bill,

took a stab at finding your plow in the rear section of lynn millers plow book. lots of illustrations of horse drawn plows. the rear wheel and lever seemed unique so i concentrated on that. and lo and behold, john deere made a ranger sulky plow, page 194, that is almost identical to your plow. even the tool box at the seatpost. of course the section in the book doesn’t have all the worlds plows, and i can’t imagine john deere not stamping their name all over the castings, so no guarantees, but i’d look on the mouldboard or points of the plow and see if there is any id there. good hunting, and i’d want to try that plow out myself, looks like a good plow.

Thanks fellas for helping me with this. Now that you talk about a retro fit, you take all the parts off and yes the beam and moldboard look just like a walking plow, less the handles. Maybe that is what it is. That Ranger sulky sounds interesting too. But yes you’re right , John Deere usually has the JD stamped on all the castings and on top of the beam, even on the walking plows. I’ll have to go for another visit and crawl around on it some more. Hopefully more will chime in here and give their 2 cents worth. Thanks again guys !!

The other thing to remember is that there were tons of companies in the plow making business (P & O for example) that were eventually bought up by JD, IH and the like.
