I have for sale a New Ideal open gear two-horse mower. I have used it a lot since we bought our farm 6 years ago for clipping pastier with my team. At this point our pasture is in much better shape and I am just not using it much any more. We don’t produce hay here, and this mower could be a reliable hay machine with some tune-up work. It has a 5′ bar and steel wheels, and is ready to run except for the need for a replacement grass board (the one I have on is bent and needs some work). The drive gearing is in good shape and it has been stored under cover. Pole is new and in excellent condition. It is set up for a Canadian plug style neck yoke but could be easily modified to fit traditional ring style yoke. Knife sections and guard fingers are all there and in good condition. The mower should be used and it has collected dust in the barn this summer season. Sale price is $400 and I am willing to negotiate or take something in trade. Feel free to email (brad@alltogetherfarm.com) or call (802-345-7488) and I can send pics as well. Please email directly or call as I do not check the forum too often with busy schedule this time of year. Serious inquiries only please.

What has been your experience of running the open gear mowers? We’re looking at one that has been stored in a barn. It has markings for McCormick Deering, New Idea, and International Harvester on it. It also has some of what looks like original painted lettering on the seat post. Pretty cool.
We’ve only ever run Mc Deering 7s and 9s, though so we’re wary of getting a different kind of machine that we don’t know very well. We have also wondered whether parts are readily available for these mowers.
We’re cutting with two teams on 7′ bars, making hay on around 60 acres this year for horses, dairy cows, and beef cows.
Thanks!
Daniel

So parts for the cutter bar are standard McCormack Deering/IHC. I rebuilt the bar on one last year and it cut pretty nicely, though I could not replace the inner ledger plate as it is different than anything I could find. The bushings for the gears and the pitman shaft are no longer available commercially for the New Ideal and the #6 as I understand it.
I have 2 New Ideals that could probably be made into 1 good one. I am not getting to them- so they are available. JayJuly 14, 2015 at 1:02 pm #85825Brad JohnsonParticipantDaniel-
I have only ever used open gear mowers, single and team. It seems like they work pretty well, though newer models show signs of improved performance. I think my mower could be very functional for someone who has some sense of what is needs and is willing to tinker a bit. Jay is right about bushings and pitman arm, though I have twice replaced the arm by making one myself – it is not hard to duplicate with oak or ash. The mower is still here if you are at all interested. I would let it for $300 at this point, as I have not used it once this season, and it is taking up space under cover.
