Hey Folks,

We have combined three events for next week. Private instructional course, “open woods day” and filming for RFD-TV. The event is open to the public if you happen to be in the area or within driving distance. I will insert the press release put in the local weekly newspaper. This is being held in a woods that is next door to a high end furniture manufacturer that uses some DRAFTWOOD to make finished goods. You may see finished furniture made from horselogged wood from restorative forestry. We will be sawing on site. The majority of the species harvested will be scarlet oak and soft maple. Many very large trees, 24″+ DBH will be harvested. Y’all come see if you can.

Open Woods Day to Demonstrate Restorative Forestry

Collaboration between several organizations will present a “Restorative Forestry” public educational event in central Floyd County on the 12th of April 2008, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The supporting organizations are The Natural Woodworking Company, Environmental Sensitive Logging and Lumber Company and Healing Harvest Forest Foundation.

The purpose of this event is to demonstrate the methods of forestry practiced to restore the woodlot to the healthiest, most vigorous condition possible. Subjects covered and demonstrated will include:
• “worst first” single tree selection silviculture
• Safe, skilled – directional timber felling
• Modern Animal Powered Extraction (horse logging)
• Value Added on site processing (portable sawmill)
• Custom Furniture Manufacturing (Natural Woodworking Company)
• Green Certified Forest Products (HHFF)

There is more forestland in Floyd County that any other landscape condition. This makes forest management the most important by simply being the largest area or portion of the environment in our county. The forest products industry is also the largest employer in the state of Virginia as far as number of people working in this industry. This includes all the jobs, from stump, to hauling, sawing, drying, to the manufacturing of the products to the eventual end user. These are all factors make this a very important issue for everyone.

Although this is a small amount of land that will not produce tremendous volume – this is an important public educational event. Government research reveals that “Landowners with less than 10 acres of forest now own 73% of forest properties in Virginia. According to recent research; new small acre, forest owners in Virginia were most motivated by lifestyle concerns such as living simply, near nature and escaping the urban stress. Yet, they are not necessarily preservationists desiring to leave the land ‘pristine’.” (VDOF February 8th 2008).

The public is invited to visit this site on Saturday to see what local interest groups and individuals are doing “to address human needs for forest product while creating a nurturing coexistence between the forest and human community” (HHFF mission statement). The “Open Woods Day” will be held just north of the intersection of Shooting Creek Road and Franklin Pike – look for the signs. Everyone is welcome.
