Hi all, Has anyone had experience using an ox (we call them bullocks here in Australia) as a pack animals? There is a trail I intend to walk that goes to a beautiful spot called Lees Paddocks. An old guy I remember well (Lewis Lee) built a hut there over 100 years ago where he grazed his cattle in the Tasmanian highlands during summer. It is now used by backpackers and the area where old Lewis Lee grazed cattle is now a national park.

The trail can be used by horses so an ox should be fine. I have an ox who works alone exceptionally well. I am not sure about packsaddles though. Will standard horse packsaddles fit OK? Should the weight be further forward on an ox? Any advice would be most welcome.

we use an old swedish army-packsaddle, the girth and belts had to be enlarged some; I hook it up to our 3-pad-harness to stabilize it; works perfectly well
your plan sounds like a lot of fun 😎
