I am increasing the size of my collars from 24″ to 26″. Is there a problem using the pads from the smaller collars?
Thanks.

Think about how much those pads cost you. Around $25 a piece, right? I’d use them things til they’re worn smack-dab slick-the-hell out, and then give ’em to the cats for a bed. Just my 2cents worth.

Rule of thumb is valid but I think if the collar pad is slightly smaller than recommended it wouldn’t impact anything on the horse unless your collar rocks or is too big. If it is too small it is just not “padding” some number of inches down the sides to under the throat. I would think if the pad extends further than the tugs your good.

I may be mistaken but im almost certain she went a lot better without it ??. More confident I thought ?? any thoughts…

John, I have pulled out the pads (especially recently as their necks have enlarged) on occasion. I feel like the pads (especially the vinyl ones) help prevent sore shoulders on my horses. I generally don’t have a problems logging in the winter, but have had issues with shore shoulders while haying in the summer. Bare collars seems like it would be akin to hiking with no socks on. However, I think Les Barden (d-ring harness expert) is an advocate of no pads.

Considering that collar fit and placement is the most important aspect of harnessing in my book, I don’t skimp. I use adjustable collars and have a couple of different sized pads when I tighten or loosen up. Realize that spot of the collar is where the majority of energy transfer takes place.
Avoiding sore shoulders is paramount. Sore shoulders = no work
