Evening all!
We have a team of Suffolks, and we are in need of some advice on good pasture mixes including percentages of each
type of grass. Our neighbours keep dairy cows and don’t see anything wrong with placing the team on a field of
alfalfa!
We are taking back more of our fields this year and want to turn them back into good horse pasture. Are we better of keeping some fields purely for cutting hay and others as permanent pastures that we rotate them through.
At present the girls have a large grassy hillside that they graze but they are in need or more room and we also need tobe able to rest these areas for longer.
We are in Ontario and I know some grasses are suited for different climates. Any advice would be fantastic.April 28, 2012 at 12:43 am #73543fogishParticipantYou may want to contact Etheridge Seed Farms. They can make recommendations based upon your soil type, drainage, and the types of grass/forage you want in the pasture. IE: Rye, Wheat, Orchard, Brome, Alfalfa, Legume, Fescue… on and on. I purchased my first horse from them several years ago and when I moved not too long ago they helped me set up a new pasture.
I really like Orchard, Rye and Clover mixed but those three work well with my irrigation allowances and climate. How much maintenance are you going to be doing? I don’t know how much you know about pasture management but the less you do the harder it is to keep your pasture diverse and producing high quality forage.
