Well I finally got the welder guy to come over and do the welding for me… and Now my awesome training sled is complete with a pole. this is a heavy sled… and would not really slide up on them with just a chain to the doubletree… but thanks to the advice on here…. I was able to get a pole set up and removeable so I can still use it on the manure spreader once they get trained for that….!!
It sure works nice and pulls nice…now to get the team to start evenly… and it will be even better. It was a good work out today for them. I Hope I can post the photos on here… hang tight. hehe.

That design lots neat. But, do you find that you lack lift on the front of the sled runners? I know on my logging bobsled that this lift from the pole on the front of the runners is pretty important with a large load on the bunk. Also, the pole is important for turning the bob…

So far I have only used it in the hay field to train the youngster with my mare.. no load except my weight which is not light… hehe. I plan to put a bus seat on it about in the middle… since I have horrible balance… and would probably do me good too… once they figure out how to start together instead of see sawing. I got this idea from someone on this board who uses this set up on his rigs… has slipped my mind who it was though but I think it was this time last year…I asked about it. I have not posted much… so might be able to search it out. I also dont have a bob runner situation where I can see a set pole would need to be rigid for turning.. This is just two beams from front to back and well pretty heavy too.
July 30, 2012 at 8:14 am #74571katmooreParticipantI went back to my posts… it was Rod from vermont who showed me his photos of his set up… so I just took it from there and my welder guy did the best he could to my description.

I am open to any ideas… and advice on this. My intention is just to give them some none wheeled rig to pull to get used to working together… before hooking them to the forecart… I am training a 3 year old clyde who is new… and putting him with my 12 year old belgian who has been there done that…and trained three other youngsters to drive…. I dont think I will be on it long.. just enough to make sure they can work together and stop and start well together…. I am also draggin a tire by itself too with them… its a lot lighter but its still a big empty tractor tire…. and they seem to be working well on it.
thanks again in advance for any tips!July 31, 2012 at 1:25 pm #74569Andy CarsonModeratorIt would be a simple modification to add some chains that run from the front corners of your sled to the center of your pole. They would have to be just the right length so as to allow turning, but prevent jack-knifing. Once you have the length determined, you could set up hooks and the pole would still be easy to transfer from one thing to another. It could be just like hooking up a trailer, one ball, two chains. I think this is a great idea.
