Greetings!
So happy to have found this site and group! I have 2 10-11HH native Shetland/Welsh ponies that I rescued a few years ago as babies from a neglect situation. I hadn’t had any horses for about 10 years (life) but had a small holding of 2.5 acres that we desired to homestead on. My original thought was to train my girls to be pleasure driving ponies, which I have done for the most part, although the younger one (who is deaf) is still green. This was all well and good until I and they got really bored!I discovered that these tough little ponies were VERY strong and have a fantastic work ethic, so I started to wonder if we could put them to work. Driving around in circles and even on the roads and trails had become a bit pointless, shall we say. So I bought a little singletree and began dragging fence posts etc around the farm. This went so well that my husband and I built a skid sled or stoneboat out of old telemark skis and discarded lumber, which also is working really well.
I’m looking forward to learning more, particularly about putting my girls together as a pair. I have lots of single horse driving experience, but exactly no pairs experience. I would like to get a pony sized forecart with a dump cart behind it to haul manure, compost, hay, and firewood. I am finding this site a wealth of knowledge with friendly folks! Also looking forward to some NY and New England contacts so I can take a workshop or two.
Here’s my 4 year old mare Sasha with her new singletree. My harness is for pleasure driving but has a well padded curved breastcollar. Will be getting a regular collar and hames eventually.

We are also hosting a winter logging workshop in Athol Ma in December. If you want more information about that let me know.
