Red Pee

Has any one out there in cyber-horse land ever observed their horses urinating a reddish colored urine? It seems for years i’ve noticed my horses, usually late in the winter discharging a red colored urine that i take notice of. Not consistently.The horses are fed well,and healthy, have access to plenty of water and seem to do it wether they’ve had access to salt and kelp or not. Could it be a metabolic shift from winter to spring? Its definetly not blood and only seems to happen a couple of times from one or two animals, thats it.???

How do you know it’s not blood in the urine? You can check it pretty easy w/ a urine dipstick (can get from your vet) to make sure it’s not bloody urine. Same one or two animals each time or does it vary?

I have had the same thing happen with both mares and geldings. It has something to do with the mix of the urine and air. Not sure why it does not happen all the time, but it doesn’t. I notice it mostly in the winter in the snow. The urine is yellow coming out but turns red on the ground over time. Unnerving when I first got horses. Vet has assured me nothing is wrong.

Jean, that would make sense to me. Its not all the time, mares and geldings and only in the winter. Its not blood red what ends up on the ground but more of a rusty color. I have never been worried about it because all the health indicators of my horses were good. Just thought some one might have an idea about what it was.
