For Chrismas I got the DVD “training oxen” by Conroy and Huppe.
In the chapter about the yoke and it’s correct fit Allison Huppe drives her team hitched to a stoneboat with concret blocks.
In the frontview one can see that the team pulls “like a V” ; the legs closer together than the heads.
Following Conroy says that the yoke has a good fit: head position is right during pulling, bows are set correct in the high and are correct in the width a.s.o.
But my question is whether the “run position” does apparently completely not interest .
I want my team going in a vertical position to the ground.
What’s the opinion of the experts here about this ?

    Thank you

I have not seen the video so I can’t comment on it exactly. I do know, though, that sometimes cattle will haul out a little bit, particularly when they have not been worked for a while and are first on a load and want to step out quickly. They may well have squared up after they settled down.

Tim is right. We have that video – I watch it regularly, as there aren’t a great number of cattle videos out there. The team is “hauling out” a bit because they’re on the relatively hard surface of that road. When you see them later on hauling the logs and spreader they’re on softer ground and more parallel.

    ooops…embarrassing….
As a reader AND fan of the Conroy-book I should have known what “running like a V” is because he describes this behavior. But I was irritaded because he didn’t lose a word about it.

    Thank you !
