Im looking for some pointers. Told a picked up an Oliver model G 10″ walking plow. Its a right side. It has the piece on the front with about 9 holes for adjustment horizontally and it looks like you can move a bolt and move it up and down 3 holes. I have a few questions. First if I put longer handles on it will it not work properly? Secondly I assume you use some sort of clevis and chain to attatch it to a single tree.( I should add I will be plowing single with a belgian mare). I plan on getting farmer Brown’s video as I have heard it is slightly more informative then Miller’s book. However, can’t afford it right now. How long should this length of chain be. Does it depend on the draft angle? The plow parts seem to be in fairly decent shape and once its cleaned up it should plow well. Also should I put a gauge wheel on it and maybe a jointer? I feel like the guage wheel is a good idea, just not sure about the jointer. Any pointers will greatly be appreciated.

You can make a simple depth guage out of some flat bar and make a foot on the bottom to ride along the dirt. We used a old set of trace chains to hook to the front of the plow and then to the single tree. Then you just have to play with the length to get the plow in the ground. I have found that a jointer does not work very well on those small plows, so unless you going to plow in competion plowing I would not worry about it. Hope this helps

It appears that there is some funding for a new/ young farmer to attend our Plowing Clinic with Sam Rich, if you were able to get these funds and manage a ride for your horse, many of your questions would be answered there.

We are still at the very beginning of attempting to ground drive. I was just asking so that I would have the plow all ready and in its best condition when the time arrives. But thank you for the offer. Maybe next year if its happening then.
